Ashura Reminiscences Mumbai

ashura

ashura

ashura

Ashura differs from one Indian city to another , but a silken thread that binds each city is Imam Hussain, every city has its cultural ethnicity woven into the Azadari of Hussain, but the cry of Ya Hussain remains the same.
The tears that drop like raindrops from Shia eyes are universally the same, a drop of a tear a drop of blood shed for Imam Hussin is the same, this is what seamlessly binds the Shia in India, the Shia in Pakistan, the Shia in Iraq, or the Shia in Iran or Azaibaijan, inclusing the migrant Shias in America , Canada Australia Europe or Gulf or even in Japan.
This is the motivation of Moharam called Maksade Hussain.
I am unfortunate I discovered congregational Shia Islam much late in life about 6 years back, I try to shoot some different city , but if I am short of finance I stay back shoot Moharam in Mumbai.People love to celebrate Moharam in their own home towns, that is why in Mumbai, all the Shias from various cities they hail from, leave for their hometowns.
This is called catching up with the folks where they grew up.
I have no such binding, I belong to no anjuman, fiercely independant a creature of wavering moods I am lead by my nose and my bare feet to strange places where I know not a single soul, but somehow miraculously I meet people there become friends a new bond is formed..this is the healing aspect of Islam, it brings your closer to your roots of bondship.

Mumbai Ashura in the morning is a very Iranian tradtional passion play. The entire events stage managed Shimr, drums, Yazidi forces, all congregating at Imambada Amin.Fellow Shias avoid this event as the human playing the role of Imam Hussain is something very hard to digest, I know what the traditional Sikhs felt when Baba Rahim of Sacha Sauda dressed himself up as Sant Guru Gobind Singh.
This is blashphemy. But for the Iranians of Mumbai it is life as usual.
The other aspect that got on my liberal goat is guys dressed with horrendous mask , like Hijabs portraying the Bibis of the House of Hussain, taking little kids to bless them in the Cradle of Ali Asghar the Imams 6 month child who was shot by the arrow of Harmulla, ..one of these pictures was used derogatorily in Times of India, in an article on Hand Free Matam by journalist Mohamed Wajihuddin.
Any way I try to be less critical or vocal, I have shot the event here , after the Juloos ends in the quadrangle, cramped for space, women men children.
The drums beat and the scourgings start, I honestly think, the scourgings and the forehead cutting and the sword Matam display is so fiercely bloody , people watching go into a faint..you cannot shoot this from close, its that bad, backs open up, pieces of human mutton chunks splattering the wallls, danger of being hit all around.
I shot all this on negs have no time or the funds to get it scanned, I shot slides and black and whites too, the first yeat I shot 40 rolls, sitting on a gate of Imambada Amin , yes I unlearnt photography , by trial error shooting Moharam.
Atfer the bloody matam gets over the crowds mover over to Fotowat or to Moghul Masjid to break the fast or Faqqa with Iranian Khichda.. that was kept on a simmering fire all night.
Later in the evening after 5 pm,from Yaqqub Gully close to Chor Bazar, the Hindustani Shias take out their Juloos, that crawls, with Anjumams from all over Mumbai, Bangalore, Hallor, Jaunpur, moving to end at Shia cemetery or Rehmatabad, on the roads more blood chilling scenes, sabils offering water, taburakkat, women kids, near the Dongri circle the Shiv Senas , other Hindus chip in to offer tea cold drinks, here standing atop a car eminent Shia scholar Hamid Jaffery gives a discourse on the contribution of Imam Hussains sacrifice to Humanity, people listen attentively,, after this at Rehmatabad it is the much awaited Majlis Shame e Gariba, after the Majlis , Rehmatabad is a pond of blood, there is a childrens juloos, alams , Zuljana, yes this is in a nutshell Ashura in Mumbai..I think I could say it more cogently with my pictures…

The pictures are of Lucknow Ashura, as this is my continuing subject at the moment.. but you can see Ashura in Mumbai at my homesite ,

Ashura

ashura

Ashura is 10 th of Moharam , the Shias celebrate the Martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain, there is a seeeping heaviness in the air, a scorching dryness, a surrendering moment of grief.
Seas of black humanity, cacading with families carrying the Tazias, children leading from the front trudging, reciting the matam moving towards Karbala Talkatora.
Today after 9 days the water has run dry, the sabils are ghostly , no children serving water, just a languishing lassitude of a momotonous memory.
Moharam in Lucknow is ultimate , two months eight days you live breathe Moharam.
Yes you relive Moharam.Every house has a majlis, going on, the bylanes of Pata Nala, drag your feet towards Chup Tazia house, Maulana Ashfaque, talking about Moharam in sepia toned eras of Mir Anis, in times of Mir Dabir, or Mir Taki Mir.
Patronised fiercely by the Shia charcater of the Nawabs of Avadh.
Today it is the heritage of Karbala , kep alibe by theNawabs in the various Rozas at Bada Imambada , Chota Imam bada, Kazmain.
The Nawabs lit a candle that is incandescent for all time.
Azadri cannot will not die.
The Nawabs of Avadh gave up their kingdoms to keep Azadrari alive.
Shia Gulabis, Shia Wahabbis, post modern Nakkanis or any vested interest anti Shia, cannot uproot the cry of Ya Hussain .
Man dies , generations die over the corpses of the dead rises anothr generation, beating his chest, cutting his forehead scourging, keeping the apsidistra of shiasm on the window sill alive… for all to see …Kulu Yomin Ashura .
Everyday is Ashura.

Zuljana Victorious Zuljana

zuljana

zuljana

zuljana

I have said so much about Zuljana on the battlefield of Karbala.
He stood by hs Master.
Yes even Yazids forces stood by their Master, loyal till the end, these namaz praying, fasting Moslems, who had once uttered La He Laha Ilal Lah Mohomadun Rasool Ilalah, the Kalma the key to Islam, yet here they are with blindfolded guilty consciousness slaughtering his seed.
It amazes me, but one man amongst them changed the course of Islamic betrayal towards the Imams family , by moving away from Yazid, a commander of Yazids forces called Hur.He asked for the Imams forgiveness , fought by the side of the Imam.
He saved himself the curses of a lifetime.
But these are all thinking men, religiously adhering to Islam, Yazids foot soldiers , cavalry, infantry, camel ridden, troops , yet none can challenge the exemplary behaviour of Zuljana.
Yes that one name stands out in a human crowd.
Zujana Imam Hussains valiant Steed.
The Victory magazine people dont allow you to copy from their site, but they have something on Zuljana too.
THe Zuljana I write about is a Zuljana who belongs to everyone, a common mans Zuljana.
The Victory Magazine has a made over Designer Zuljana.
Yes better one does not copy.

Shia Wahabbis ..

alam abbas

.

This is the area outside the Dargah Hazrat Abbas, the center of gravity , of a Shia Lucknow in terms of invoking the blessings of the Lion Hearted , standard bearer brother of Hazrat Imam Hussain.Every Shia touches the Dargah Hazarat Abbas , this is an awesome place of spiritual sanctity.
I have seen people struggling in the clutches of ruthless Death, lying on the floor a thread tied to their hand , the same thread around the Alam Abbas, a kind of spirtual blood transfusion of Faith.I mean think you have everything, you have God too , but if you dont have Faith what do you have.It is not just a mans belief that need to be respected, but the intangible quality that demands respect it is Faith.
I have seen wonders of Faith.
For the Shias Hazarat Abbbas is the wonders of Faith.
A staunch believer protector of his brother , he never ever called Imam Hussain as Brother , but Moulah Akka Hussain.
This valiant warrior with the strength of Ali running in his veins, bravery was his Motherhood.
His mother was chosen as Hazrat Alis wife from a brave valiant family, after the passing away of Bibi Fatima.Abbas is immortal strength of faith .
Round his neck on the Alam Abbas lies the testimony of his favorite neice Sakina , the little pouch she had given him to collect water from the fringes of cruel Euphrates, water he could not get , they shot him down, the indomitable strength of Yazid against a single warrior Abbas Alamdar, he fough valiantly, his body pierced with several holes , mingling with the many holes in the water pouch called Mashke Sakina, yes the Mashke Sakina breathed its last , water flowing like tears , hypnotising time emotionalising a scene immemorial in the annals of Islamic history.
I have copied many a link from Shia sites about Hazrat Abbas, but this post is words spouting from the sanctity of my soul my love for Hazrat Abbas, yes this is the same Dargah where Shia hardliners stuck my pictures demanding my head for the hacked contents on my Buzznet site.
I will never visit Lucknow, a city living on Hate , fuelled by Hate, yes these are the Shia Wahhabis, who are bent on stopping Azadari for good, faceless people of our community who wear black clothes like hijabs hiding their black evil agenda, I was told about them by a Nawab the scion of the erstwhile nawab family. He was deeply hurt , sad when he talked to me on the phone.Of Doom being premediately planned by members of our community, vested agents of Yazidiyat.Yes I can only call them Shia Wahhabis.Shia Talibans.
Our enemies of Shiasm are not those who openly agitate against us, condemn our faith in Ahle Bait as heresy, politically try to marginalise us through ruling parties at the State and the Centre. For we are just 10% democracy to rule needs more than 90%Muslim votes.
Luckily Hussainiyat is our birthright , atleast I dont see Shias asking for OBC other backward caste position, we are dying because it is our kind that wants us dead, buried ,for good.

Karbala Jhuk Nahi Sakti..
Tumhare Jhukane se
Ya Hussain Ek Aisi Cheekh
Joh rakhti hai hame Zinda
Har Zamane se
Azadari E Hussain
Abbas ke Alam ke pharere
me lehrati huee
sadiyon ke satane se
shama bhujti nahi
dushman ke bhujane se

Shahadat E Bibi Fatima

bibi fatima

Janatul Baqi Google Images

I write about Shia women, the fountain head of our Faith, the beacon of light of our Faith.
They only they are the powerhouse of our impregnable Faith.
Without Shia women there is no Shiasm.Shiasm is alive as Shia women as Mothers , bring forth Faith , faith as a newborn child, who will become the father of Man.
For me no Mullahdom, no monument man made is greater than the contribution of the Shia mother. She is the embodiment of a single drop of tear that fell from the eye of Bibi Fatima, yes our race is born through a drop of a tear, a mothers tear to a Shia mother, a pledge between Bibi Fatima and her Shia women to keep the flame of Shiasm alive.

Yes I touch a Shia mothers feet, beneath it lies Paradise.Call me a Heretic, I will reply yes I am a Shia.
It is Bibi Fatima the unfortunat mother , who worked, labored on the grinding stone to wean her children Hassan and Hussain, wife of Hazrat Ali, daughter of the Holy Prophet.
This erstwhile mother worked on the grinding stone, this lady devout, humble, the daughter of the richest woman on the Arabian Pnninsular Bibi Khadija.
She suffered on the passing away of the Messenger of God, deprived of her personal inheritance, ill treated by a political Islam, she stood her ground.Already aware of the hardships to come, hardships on her children, on Islam. But she led from the front, it is her values, that she instilled in her children, that saved Islam from Islam.
Martyrdom is an inalienable spiritual right of Inheritance..
Karbala was the battleground of Faith that stood against a powerful Yazidi force, each one slaughtered, Arab cruelty at its worst, death you would not wish for your worst nemy , such a death was meted out to the kith and kin of the Holy Prophet , this is not a melodrama or Majlis rhetoric, this is Truth, that for 1400 years the people have ignored chosen to erase Karbala…but Karbala is imprinted on every Shia heart..The Shia mother is the soul of our Shiasm who keeps our faith alive.Maksade Fatima for a Maksade Hussain.
It is Azadari E Hussain , that is a Shia mothers Motherhood that she passes onto us her children..yes I am crying this is in rememberance of my dead Mother , she made me a better Shia than a Shia hardliner.

Shah ast Hussain, Baad Shah ast Hussain,
Deen ast Hussain, Deen Panah ast Hussain,
Sar dad na daad dast, dar daste Yazeed,
Haqqah ke binaaye La Ilaha ast Hussain!

Tomorrow is th eve of the Martyrdom of Bibi Fatima..
Wife and my daughter, my daughter in law have been attending 5 days ladies majlis at Shia Mehfil at Bandra Bazar Road.

Third Infallible Fatima (SA), daughter of the Holy Prophet (SAW)

The Prophet of Islam had only one daughter named Fatima. Her mother Khadija had two other daughters from her two earlier marriages. When The Prophet married her, both daughters came with her mother to live in the house of the Prophet. Hazrat Fatima (SA) was born five years after Besath (Declaration of Prophet hood) when Muhammad (SAW) was about 45 years old and her mother Khadija was about 55 years old. The Date of her birth was 20th Jumada al-Akhar. She has many following titles.

Al-Siddiqah (The Honest One)
Al-Mubarakah (The Blessed One)
At-Taherah (The Virtuous)
Az-Zakiyah (The Chaste)
Ar-Radhiah (The Satisfied or Gratified One)
Al-Mardhiah (Who well-pleases Allah)
Az-Zahra (The Splendid One/ Lady of Light)
Al-Batoul (The Chaste and Pure One)
Al-Adhra (The Virgin or the Chaste)
Al-Muhaddathah (Who spoken by Angels)
Syedatun Nisa al-Alamin (Leader of the women of the worlds)
After the death of her mother Khadija, she looked after her father the Prophet of Islam so devoutly that Muhammad (SAW) used to call her “Umm-e-Abiha”, i.e. the mother her father. This was the hardest time for the family because in the same year Abu Talib who was the protector of Muhammad (SAW) from the animosity of the Quraish also died in the same year as Khadija. Muhammad (SAW) married Umm-e-Salama, an old widow after the death of Khadija to have someone to look after the household chores. When Umm-e-Salama was requested to tutor the child Fatima (SA), the wise woman replied “How can I tutor one who is the personification of high virtues and purity. It is I who should learn from her.” Her childhood, therefore, was passed in a very chaste and modest environment. It was then that she saw her revered father preaching Islam in the most hostile atmosphere. The hostility of the Quraish after the death of Abu Talib and Khadija was the strongest. Fatima saw and dressed the wounds sustained by her father due to the stones thrown on him by the non-believers. She might have heard and seen that certain wretched women hurled rubbish on her noble father. She might have learnt of the plans made to put an end to her father’s life. But from all these things Fatima was neither frightened nor disheartened. She comforted her father, tended to his wounds even at that tender age. The entire family was blanketed with clouds of sorrowful gas a result of the almost daily humiliation and mockery to which her most revered father was subjected.

Migration

When the migration took place, Fatima was left in Makka with the rest of the family which included her step mother Umm-e-Salama, Ali’s (AS) mother Fatima binte Asad and many others. Ali (AS) was in charge of the family. He stayed in Makka for another 3 days to give back the deposits to the Makkans who entrusted these to the Prophet for safe keeping. After fulfilling this duty Ali (AS) brought the family to Madina.

Marriage

After one years stay in Madina when Fatima(SA) was about 10 years old that proposals for marriage began to be received by the Prophet who politely refused to accept by simply saying that it is in the hands of Allah, that he was awaiting Allah’s decree in this matter.

Fatima (SA) was the model of Prophet’s teaching among women just as Ali (AS) was the best embodiment of his instructions and manly qualities among men. They were the most suitable couple to be married. But Ali (AS) was too modest to speak about it. After some persuasion from friends he finally went to see the Prophet in the mosque and proposed for marriage. Prophet told Fatima about it and asked her whether she would approve. After receiving her consent the marriage of Fatima (SA) and Ali (AS) took place in the simplest possible manner. Ali (AS) sold his shield of amour for 200 Dirhams, brought the money to the Holy Prophet (SAW) who added a similar amount and asked his companions to buy household goods to set up home for the Holy Family. Marriage was solemnized by the Prophet himself and after marriage the couple went to live in a separate house next to the House of the Prophet around the Mosque.

Children

Hassan (AS) was born in the 3rd year of Hijra, Hussain (AS) was born in the 4th year of Hijra, Zainab was born in the 6th year of Hijra, Umm-e-Kulsoom was born in the 7th year of Hijra.

It was in the same house that the famous Verse of Purification (Sura 33.Verse 33) was revealed on the Holy Prophet and its narration by Fatima has become so famous that it is read in every Muslim house as Hadith-e-Kisa. The Reading of this Hadith brings blessings to the household. (Tafseer-e-Kabir by Al-Razi)

It was in the same house where this blessed family fasted for three days continuously without eating any food giving away their Iftari to a beggar, an orphan and a prisoner who arrived at their door and asked for food. The Verse in Sura Dahr revealed in praise of their extremely charitable act in the way of Allah.

It was in the same house where every morning the Holy Prophet stood outside and said loudly “Assalamo Alaikum Ya Ahlebaitin Nubuwwah” Peace and blessings on the people of the Household of the Nabi.

There was so much respect in the heart of the Holy Prophet for Fatima (SA) that whenever Fatima (SA) arrived in the mosque of the Prophet, the Holy Prophet (SAW) stood up to respect her. This gesture was also to show the companions respect for women generally which was lacking in the Arabian society of the day.

These acts of the Prophet (SAW) were to show the companions that this house and its occupants have a special place in the way of Allah and that this status should be maintained after the death of the Prophet (SAW). Unfortunately this was not done as the Holy Prophet (SAW) intended his companions to do. History tells us some very sad moments connected with this house.

After the death of the Prophet when Ali (AS) did not come out to give his oath of allegiance to Abu Bakr, the door of the house was burnt down to get him out and in the process Fatima (SA) was injured. Her 5th unborn child (Mohsin) died because of this harsh action of some of the companions and she herself died within 3 months of the death of her Holy Father.

The following lines of poetry show her ordeal after the death of her holy father very clearly.

“After the death of my father my sufferings were so great that if such hardships fell upon days, the days would turn into nights.”

Fatima (SA) was a symbol of womanhood in Islam. How a daughter, a wife and a mother should behave in their ordinary lives. She was devoted to her father, looked after him when he was in distress by the hands of the non-believers of Makka, she was the exemplary wife, queen of her household yet fair to her maid servant Fizza to divide household chores between herself and the maid servant, she was a devout wife and the most loving mother to her children.

There were occasions when there was no food for the family, but she would never complain. Once Ali (AS) went out to do some work to get food for the family but returned empty handed. Fatima asked Ali (AS) what happened to the food. Ali (AS) said that he did earn some money and bought food, but while on his way home he met some poor hungry persons and gave away all the food to them. When the Prophet heard of this situation he brought some food for the family and told them that Ali’s charitable act was of the greatest value in the eyes of Allah.

The whole family was thankful to Allah and there were no complaints against anyone.

She would go to the mosque of the Prophet to participate in the prayers with all the ladies; she would go out in the battlefield to tend the wounded. In the battle of Ohud, when her father was injured she tended him, cleaned his wounds, put some burnt wool on the wounds to stop blood flowing. When the Holy Prophet (SAW) recovered, he thanked her for her great work in the battlefield.

Death of Hazrat Fatima (SA)

On 3rd of the month of Jumada al-Thani Hazrat Fatima (SA) died. This was about 90 days after the death of her Holy Father. Asma binte Umais in the same house to help her household work tells the story of her death in a very moving manner. When the day arrived she prepared food for her children, then she told Asma that she was going to her prayer room. She would say Takbeer loudly at various intervals. When Asma does not hear the sound of Takbeer she should go out to the mosque and tell Hazrat Ali (AS) about the death of his wife. If in the meantime the children come home give them food before telling them about the death of their mother. Hasan and Hussain arrived and Usma brought some food for them. They said they do not eat without their mother and she had to tell the children of the death of their mother. Both entered the prayer room and stayed with her for a while. Hazrat Ali (AS) arrived and prepared for the last rites. When he was giving her last bath he cried loudly. Asma asked the reason and he said he could not bear to see the wound by her side when the door of the house fell on her due to commotion by some of the companions of the Prophet when they all wanted Ali (AS) to come out of the house for the oath of Allegiance to Abu Bakr. After performing the last rites she was taken to the cemetery of Baqi in the darkness of the night for burial as per her wish. Very few family members were present at the burial of the daughter of the Prophet. Some historians say that she was buried in her own house which became part of the Masjid-e-Nabavi during the reign of Umavi Caliph Umar Ibne Abdul Aziz.

Azadari -House Imambara

 azadri

I was standing near my father in law Abbas Qasim Qazilbash’s shop called Diamond Cassettes ,when a person dressed in black approached me , he was the owner of the property where my father in laws shop is stuated, he asked me to come and shoot his house Imambara, the Alam is about 1100 years old..the oldest heirlooms from Karbala, including the soil that his forefathers had bought from there..
It seemed strange I told him, that though we did not know each other , yet his House Imambara is going to be seen by all you guys on the Internet..so some pictures become links , you sitting out there are now in this mans house , normally he would not allow you, as the House Imambara is the ladies domain..Zenana as we call it..
I could not post the twelve alams on the wall as they did not fit in my lens..
I also do not remember his name .
But even in Hyderabad I visited several houses of Nawabs , their House Imambaras are trips down memory lane ..old heirlooms, Alams given to their forefathers for bravery by the erstwhile rulers the Nizams of Hyderabad..
Unfortunately all this is on negatives I have not yet scanned , its an exppensive task, tedious too but I have a treasure trove that you wont find on Google Search either..as a photographer I shot with the sensitivity of a poet, I let pictures burn on the CDs of your consciousness.
At the moment I am at my shop waiting for my Belgian photographer friend Marc de Clerq to arrive, I spoke to Laxmi she leaves for Amsterdam to attend the Transgender festival and the screening of her film Between the Lines shot in Koovagam Koothandavar Eunuch feast.
Lucky Laxmi Narayan Tripathi.
I think all of us bloggers or celebrity journalists should share our contents so that a larger readership gets access to it, sometimes just making money is not Adsense of a common sense..bu twe all want to make extra bucks we should.
I too would like to as I desperately need to buy a new camera..I spoke to Vinay Paralkar who bought a high end Canon , the camera has given him lots of problems he is planning to switch bak to Nikon.. so the Camera wars continue we the consumer suffer raped at both ends by Canon and by Nikon..
It still hot in Mumbai..

From Wikipedia
Azadari (Persian : عزاداری) means mourning. Azadari of Moharram means mourning for Imam Husayn ibn Ali , his family and companions. This tradition is commemorated every year on the Tenth of Muharram- known as Day of Ashura by Shias also called Azadars or Azadar-e-Husayn.

Azadari was started by the household of Prophet Muhammad(p) (Ahl-ul-Bayt)(p)after the martyrdom of Imam Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad(p) at the Battle of Karbala in the year 61 AH (AD 680) by the Yazidi forces.

Zaynab bint Ali(p) the granddaughter of Prophet Muhammad(p) and daughter of Ali ibn Abu Talib(p) started azadari to tell the people about the atrocities occurred in Karbala on the people of the household and the sacrifices made by Imam Ḥusayn ibn Ali(p) for the cause of Islam

Zaynab bint Ali(p)exposed the evil deeds of Ibn-Ziyad and Yazid I, the Umayyad caliph. through her bold and fearless speeches she gave on her journey to medina after the Battle of Karbala.

Imam Zayn al-Abideen(p) also propagated the message of the “Husaini Revolution” by his historical sermons and speeches delivered in Iraq, Syria and Hejaz.

The word spread that Yazid has martyred Prophet Muhammad’s (p) grandson Husayn ibn Ali and all 72 of his companions including his 6 months old son Ali Asghar(p), and the women and children were taken prisoners to Syria.

Word came to Yazid that there was turmoil and unrest in the realm he decided to release the Family members (Ahl-ul-Bayt)(p). He sent for Imam Ali ibn Husayn(p) known to Muslims as Imam Zain-ul-Abideen(p) and shia often refer to him as Imam Sajjad. He informed the Imam of his impending release and asked if he wished for anything. Imam Zain-ul-Abideen(p) said he would have to consult with his aunt. Zaynab binte Ali(p)asked Yazid to provide a place where the family and the people who come to visit them can mourn for Imam Husayn and other members of the Prophet’s Household. A house was therefore provided in Syria (Sham) and here Zaynab binte Ali(p) held the first Majalis-e-Aza of Imam Husayn(p) and started Azadari.

The women of the Syria (Sham) arrived clad in black, with their heads uncovered, weeping wretchedly. Imam Zain-ul-Abideen(p) sat on the carpet of Imam Husayn(p) and then bibi Zainab (p) told the women of Syria what had befallen upon them in Karbala and Kufa. They shed tears and mourned. She vowed that Majalis-e-Aza and Azadari for Imam Husayn(p) will begin from the same house of yazid who ordered the Imam to be butchered. After returning to Medina when the people wanted to invite Zaynab binte Ali(p) on any occasion, the only way to invite her was organize Majalis-e-Aza of Imam Ḥusayn(p). [1]

[edit] Majalis-e-Aza
The word Azadari and Majalis-e-Aza has been exclusively used in connection with the remembrance ceremonies for the martyrdom of Imam Hussain. Majalis-e-Aza also known as Aza-e-Husayn includes mourning congregations, lamentations, matam and all such actions which express the emotions of grief and above all, repulsion against what Yazid stood for.

The term majalis has both a grammatical meaning and a meaning which relates to Aza-e-Husayn. In its technical sense, a majalis is a meeting, a session or a gathering. In reference to Aza-e-Husayn, it means a gathering to mourn Imam Husayn(p) In this sense it was first used by the sixth Imam, Ja’far Sadiq(p). It is reported that his companion al-Fudhayl Ibne Yasaar came to pay his respects to the Holy Imam. After the exchange of usual courtesies, Imam asked al-Fudhayl: “Do you people ever organise majalis to recall the martyrdom of Imam Hussain?” Al-Fudhayl, with tears pouring down his eyes, replied: “Yabna Rasulillah, indeed we do.” The Imam said: “May Allah bless you. I highly approve of such majalis.” [2]

Shia also resite ALLAHUMMA SALLI ALA MUHAMMADIN WA ALA ALI MUHAMMAD various times during azadari and whenever the name of Prophet Muhammad(p)and his household (Ahl-ul-Bayt)(p) is mentioned. It means “O Allah, please shower your blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad. The family is referred to as Ahl-ul-Bayt

Philosophy of Azadari

Philosophy of Azadari

By Zaheer Abbas Karim

“I have risen (against Yazid) as I wish to reform the ummah of my grandfather. I wish to encourage the good and discourage the evil, and follow in the way of my grandfather (Rasulullah) and my father, ‘Ali bin Abi Talib” - King of the Martyrs, Imam Husayn(as) Day of Ashura: 10th Muharram / 5th April

Salaamun ‘alaykum,

The memorable days of Muharram are passing by with a river of tears and thunder of the matam. This is the remembrance of the King of the Martyrs, the remembrance that our Holy Prophet (saww) had promised:

When the Holy Prophet (saww) informed Lady Fatima (sa) of the Martyrdom in store for his grandson, she burst into tears as asked “O my father! When would my son be martyred?”

“In such a critical moment,” replied the Holy Prophet, “when neither I nor you, nor Ali would be alive.”

This accentuated her grief and she inquired again, “Who then, O my father, would commemorate Hussain’s Martyrdom?”

The Holy Prophet said, “The men and the women of a particular group of my followers, who will befriend my Ahlul Bayt, will mourn for Hussain and commemorate his martyrdom each year in every century.”

Brothers and sisters recently there have been many attacks on the different elements of mourning (azadari). It is baffling and quite shocking that people have started to label the Alam of Abbas (as), the cradle of Ali Asgher (as), the replicas of the Mausoleums of the Ma’sumeen (as) etc., as idols that are ‘worshiped’ by Shias as they were ‘worshiped’ in the Indian subcontinent. Even more shocking is that this is being perpetuated by so-called enlightened Shias. These people go as far as saying that calling upon Moula ‘Ali for help is Shirk. This is the same group of people that have a problem with our different cultures and want to reduce the majaalis of Imam al-Hussain (as) into mere lectures with no matam, no black clothing, no mourning, no outburst of cries, no emotion!

Well, beware of falling into this satanic trap because the cursed satan works not at the bars, but within the followers of the Ahlul-bayt (as).

These articles will inshallah touch upon some Quranic references for Azadari. However, to begin with, we must rid ourselves from the understanding that calling upon Imam Ali (as) ‘YA ALI MADAD’ is shirk. When Imam is called upon, the caller KNOWS that Imam will come to his/her help ONLY via the authority given to him by Allah (swt). This is nothing but Ibadah of Allah (swt). By the way, if you have a tablet or see a doctor when you are ill as you feel that this is the only thing that will cure me, then it is Shirk! So before we attack the fundamentals of the Shia faith, let us see how many idols we have worshiped in our lives: US Dollars, UK Pounds, Ego, The Doctor, Fame, Power, The West, Materialism, Celebrities, Sports Heroes, Capitalism, The Boss at work, etc.

Undoubtedly the misguided group that calls Alams and Julas as shirk have not understood the meaning of ibadah. If an Alam was to be understood as the entity that can make a difference in one’s life, INDEPENDENT of anything else, i.e. totally removed from Allah (swt), than this is truly Shirk. However, if the Alam is respected, kissed, and used as a method to bring about emotions, and it is done so because it symbolizes the Alam of Abbas (as) that fell in Kerbala, and that Abbas (as) holds the highest authority in the eyes of Allah (swt) after the Ahlul-bayt (as), and that it is only through the power and authority given to Hazrat Abbas by Allah (swt) that will make a difference in your duas, then this is nothing but worship - ibadah of Allah (swt).

The above explanation has failed to do justice to Sheik Arif Husain’s Majalis at the Jafari Islamic Centre in Toronto on 8th Muharram, 1422 A.H. Please listen to the Majalis (8th night) as he has categorically explained the logical need and basis of taqleed, the historical roots of taqleed (right from the days of Rasulullah (saww), what is Shirk and what is not, and the Status of Hazrat Abbas (as). Sh. Arif is the Howza (al-Mahdi seminary in Birmingham UK) founder and principle. Let us listen to this Majalis, and mature our understanding of the Shia faith. The sign of jahala will be subsequent attacks on azadari.

His majaalis (sermons) in English and Urdu can be heard at http://www.islamicentre.org/multimedia/muharram.asp

Having explained that respecting the symbols of Kerbala is NOT shirk, we will now address the Quranic basis for this. However, please rid the notion that in being fed to people that Alams, Jula, niyaz (the refreshments served in the name of Al-Hussain (as)), etc. are all cultural and traditional practices of India and Pakistan. Whoever is saying this ought to get out more often! O people, realize that the Alam of Abbas is a global phenomenon for it is found in Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, South America, and even the most remote places of Africa. Know that the Alam is not just stick and cloth, but it is a philosophy within itself. Think, just think, how the Alam spread all across the world. There was no Alam conference, but there always will be the Duas of Fatima Zahra (sa). The Alam fell in Kerbala after the enemy severed the hand of Abbas (as), so let us pick up the Alam and raise it up high and call upon Abbas (as) and say, ‘O Abbas, come and look at your Alam - it is raised up for eternity’ So please, if you feel uncomfortable with the Alam, go elsewhere, but do not wage a war against the Mission of Abbas (as)!

Moulana Jawed Jafri recently explained the Quranic basis of some of the practices in Muharram. He enlightened youths with these concepts at a discussion in Muharram 1421 A.H.

Firstly, Allah (swt) declares in the Holy Quran: “… and whoever respects the signs of Allah, verily it is (the reflection) of the piety of their hearts”(22:32)

According to the ayah, a person who offers respect toward the signs of Allah, actually does so due to the piety and taqwa in his/her heart. We have explained how the Alams etc. are related to Allah (swt) as Kerbala was the place where Islam was saved. Everyday we place our forehead onto the soil of Kerbala in salaat. Again, this is nothing but Ibadah of Allah (swt)! Thus, don’t call those who kiss the Alam as blind followers, rather their respecting the signs of Allah (swt) and it is a reflection of taqwa in their hearts as per the above verse.

Consider Surah Al-Adiyat (The Chargers):

By the chargers (who are heavily breathing);
And those that dash off (their hoofs) striking fire;
And those who scour to the attack at dawn!
And stir thereby the dust aloft
And penetrate through (the foe) all of them;

History has recorded that these verses were revealed after Imam Ali (as) led an army to give the enemy a crushing defeat in the early morning. All Ulema will tell you that when Allah (swt) swears by something in the Holy Quran, He is displaying its importance. Well brothers and sisters, not only as Allah sworn in these verses by the chargers (warriors fighting in the way of Islam), and their act of dashing, and by the fire under the attacking horses, but Allah (swt) also swears by the dust that is beneath the horses that the solders were sitting upon! What magnificent symbolism the Holy Quran is showing - that the dust beneath the hoofs of the horses used in the Jihad of Allah (swt) is worthy of being an entity by which Allah (swt) swears to convey and important message. Because these were the warriors fighting in the way of Allah (swt), everyone associated with their charge becomes a sign an symbol of Allah. So how about Kerbala - the event that saved Islam forever. How about the Flag of Imam Husain (as) - the Alam of Abbas (as). Do you see now that the symbols of Kerbala are worthy of respect! And respecting them is the sign of the taqwa and piety of the heart.

In Surah As-Saba, Ayah 13 states:

“They (the Jinn) made for him (Prophet Sulaiman) whatever he willeth of fortress and models, and basins as large as reservoirs, and huge cooking cauldrons immovable from their places, ‘Act ye gratefully, O family of David! and very few of My servants are grateful’”

The words Mahreeb and Tamatheel (models) in tafsir are considered the basis for the replicas of the Mausoleums of the Holy Ahlul-bayt (as). Again, these replicas serve us as a reminder of the actual Mausoleum (Roza) of our beloved, however they act as symbols to us for us to do ziayarat from across the world.

In Surah Ash-Shams Ayah 13, the Camel of Prophet Saleh was referred to as Allah’s camel. Does this mean Allah (swt) rides of the camel? NO of course not!, rather it is showing us that everything that strives or is used in the in the path of Allah (swt) becomes a sign and symbol of Allah (Swt). This has Quranic basis.

There are many more examples, and brothers and sisters are invited to go deeper in the Holy Quran and the Hadith of the Ahlul-bayt (as) to appreciate the significant of Kerbala and its symbols. A concept that can be researched by the seeker of knowledge is the meaning behind ‘taboot’ in 2:248. According to the ayah, the heritage of Prophet Musa and Prophet Haroon are in the taboot that the angels carry; and this is a sign for the believers. How is this different from the taboot we raise in Julus and processions in Ashura?

Thus, Let us understand out religion and not be the ones who are the oppressors of the true faith. Indeed if there is one person who was against the Azadari of Imam Hussain (as), it is the cursed Yazid (la).

In conclusion, there is no Marja or Mujtahid is the Islamic world that has condemned azadari like we hear condemnation from some common self-proclaimed experts. Azadari is what has kept the religion alive.

Think: when you do tonight to the masjid; when will you ever see so many people again - what is it that brings them to perform azadari. And what are the consequences for those who try to undermine the Eternal Philosophy of Kerbala!

There is so much to read about Kerbala, and so much to learn. It quite obvious that those who wage a war against Alams and the symbols of Kerbala ought to do some more reading and reflecting. The History and Philosophy of Aza of Imam Husayn (a)
Mulla Bashir Rahim,

A. THE MESSAGE

Over one thousand three hundred and fifty years ago, on the 10th of Muharram, just before ‘asr, a man stood on a sand-dune at Kerbala. He was bleeding from several wounds on his body. He had lost everything. Since early morning he had carried several dead bodies into his camp. He had even buried his infant child.

He looked at the bodies of his loved ones. Tears flowed out of his eyes. He looked at the sky and seemed to draw some strength from an unseen source. Then, like a muezzin from a minaret, he raised a call:

Is there anyone who will come to assist us ?
Is there anyone who will respond to our call for aid ?
He turned direction and repeated the call. He did this four times.

Whom was he calling out to? Surely he was not expecting anyone to come to his aid. Those who wanted to help him had already crossed the lines and laid down their lives for the cause. He knew there was no one left. He knew that there was no other Hur. And yet, meticulously and laboriously, he made sure that his call reverberated in all directions.

Of course that call was a call to Muslims of every generation in every land. It was a call to us where ever we may be. It was a call for help. Help against Yezeedism which in every age rears its ugly head to oppress justice, truth and morality. Our Imam was calling out to every Muslim of every age and time to combat Yezeedism, both within himself and as an external force. This was his battle cry for jihad-ul-akbar. He had already demonstrated that his objective had always been to create a spiritual awakening through amr bil ma’ruf and nahyi anal munkar. Now he was calling out for the continuation of this jihad at the individual, social and political levels.

B. EVOLUTION OF AZA

Muslims, and more particularly the Shiahs, have answered this call with the unique institution of aza-e-Hussain. With every tear that we shed for him we pledge to resist the oppression of injustice, immorality, inequity and falsehood. Every time we raise our hand and bring it down on our chest in matam, we are saying: “Labbaik, Labbaik Ya Mawla!” to our Imam, Hussain Ibne Ali, the grandson of the Holy Prophet (SAWA). For long the word aza-e-Hussain has been exclusively used in connection with the remembrance ceremonies for the martyrdom of Imam Hussain. Aza-e-Hussain includes mourning congregations, lamentations, matam and all such actions which express the emotions of grief, anger and, above all, repulsion against what Yezid stood for. These emotions, however, remain futile and hypocritical unless accompanied by a will to reform both at the individual level and the community level.

The term majlis has both a grammatical meaning and a meaning which relates to aza-e-Hussain. In its technical sense, a majlis is a meeting, a session or a gathering. In reference to aza-e-Hussain, it means a gathering to mourn Imam Hussain. In this sense it was first used by our sixth Imam, Ja’far Sadiq A.S. It is reported that his companion al-Fudhayl Ibne Yasaar came to pay his respects to the Holy Imam.

After the exchange of usual courtesies, Imam asked al-Fudhayl: “Do you people ever organise majaalis to recall the martyrdom of Imam Hussain?” Al-Fudhayl, with tears pouring down his eyes, replied: “Yabna Rasulillah, indeed we do.” The Imam said: “May Allah bless you. I highly approve of such majaalis.”

On another occasion, the poet Ja’far ibne Iffaan recited to our Imam al-Sadiq a poem on the tragedy of Kerbala. The Imam began to weep uncontrollably. He then addressed the poet in the following terms:

“O Iffaan, do not think that it is only those whom you can see here are listening to your poetry. In fact Allah’s closest angels are present here at this majlis and they are all listening to your recitation and they too lament and weep. May Allah bless you for what you have recited. He will, inshallah, reward you with paradise for your efforts on our behalf.”

Aza-e-Hussain was a phenomenon which gripped Muslim conscience immediately after the tragedy of Kerbala.

The first majlis-e-Hussain was recited in the market-place of Kufa by a lady from whose head her veil had been ripped off, whose hopes and aspirations had been destroyed on the blood-drenched sands of Kerbala but whose indomitable spirit stepped forward to free the Islamic values from the yoke of tyranny and oppression. She was the first one to answer the call of Imam Hussain. Standing on her unsaddled camel, she looked at the multitude rejoicing the victory of Yezid. As soon as people saw her, they were quiet. They knew that a historic moment for Kufa had arrived. Looking straight at them, the daughter of Ali said:

“Woe upon you O people of Kufa. Do you realise which piece of Muhammad’s heart you have severed! Which pledge you have broken! Whose blood you have shed! Whose honour you have desecrated!. It is not just Hussain whose headless body lies unburied on the sands of Kerbala. It is the heart of the Holy Prophet. It is the very soul of Islam!”

The first majlis touched and moved the people of Kufa so deeply as to give rise to both the Tawwabun movement and al-Mukhtar’s quest for vengeance.

Ten days after Ashura, a messenger from Yezid arrived in Madina. His name was Abd al-Malik ibne Abi al Harith al-Sulamee. He came to tell the Governor, Amr bin Said al-Aas that Hussain ibne Ali had been killed in Kerbala.

The Governor, more conscious of the mood of the people, said that he himself could not make the news public but Abd al-Malik, if he so wished, could make the public announcement. Abd al-Malik announced the news after the morning prayers.

There was such intense weeping and wailing from the homes of Banu Hashim that the very walls of masjidun-nabawi began to tremble. Zainab, Umme Luqman, the daughter of Aqeel ibne Abi Talib came out screaming: “What will you say when the Prophet asks you: What have you, the last ummah, done with my offspring and my family after I left them? Some of them are prisoners and some of them lie killed, stained with blood. What sort of ajr-e-risaalah is this that you disobey me by oppressing my children ?”

Fatimah Binte Huzaam, also known as Ummul Baneen, carried her young grandson Ubaidullah ibne Abbas and prepared to go out. When asked where she was going, she said that she was taking the orphan of Abbas to offer condolences to the mother of Hussain.

Marwan ibne Hakam reports that every afternoon men and women would gather at Jannat-ul-Baqee and there would be remembrance of the tragedy of Kerbala and the weeping and wailing could be heard miles away.

When the prisoners were finally freed by Yezid, they asked for an opportunity to have rites of remembrance in Damascus. A house was made available to them and aza-e-Hussain went on for over a week.

Just as Hadhrat Musa Kalimullah had been raised in the palace of the enemy of Allah, Firaun, Bibi Zainab laid the foundation of aza-e-Hussain in the very capital of his murderer !

On their return to Madina, Bibi Zainab took over the leadership of aza-e-Hussain in the city of the Holy Prophet. This aroused such strong emotions in the people and such revulsion against the oppressor that Amr ibne Said ibne al-Aas wrote to Yezid to have Bibi Zainab exiled from Madina. This was done in the beginning of 62 A.H. Bibi Zainab died shortly afterwards.

Both the 4th and 5th Imams greatly encouraged aza-e-Hussain. In their times aza-e-Hussain had to be performed in utmost secrecy as the regime was opposed to any remembrance of Kerbala. The poets who composed elegies and the devout Shiahs who attended the gatherings at which these elegies were recited did so at the risk of their lives. Nonetheless, the poets continued to pour out their emotions in their poetry.

Some of these poetry are extant today and one can see the intensity of faith and sadness enshrined in the words of the poets.

Gradually, the institution of ziyarah came into being. People would visit the graves of the martyrs and there perform aza-e-Hussain. Our Imams wrote for them ziyarahs to be recited. One of these ziyarahs is recited today by us and is known as Ziyarat-e-Waritha.

When we examine Ziyarat-e-Waritha, we can see not only a testimony of the greatness of Imam Hussain and the moving sentiments describing his sacrifice for the cause of Allah, but also a solemn pledge and a commitment by the reciter:

“And I make Allah, His angels, His prophets, and His messengers, witnesses to the fact that I believe in Imam Hussain and in my return to Allah. I also believe in the laws of Allah and in the consequences of human actions. I have subordinated the desires of my heart to his (Imam Hussain’s) heart and I sincerely submit to him and (promise to follow his commands).”

Clearly, this undertaking was never meant by our Imams to be an empty ritual. Recitation of Ziyarat-e-Waritha is a commitment to Imam Hussain’s cause made in the presence of Allah and the angels and the prophets and the messengers and in full awareness of the final accountability of human action. One must always reflect upon the seriousness and solemnity of this pledge.

Until the time of ghaibat-e-kubra, we find that our Imams always encouraged aza-e-Hussain. They saw in aza-e-Hussain not only a demonstration of grief for Imam Hussain and the martyrs of Kerbala but also a renewal of one’s commitment to Allah and His laws as expounded in the Holy Qur’an and the ahadeeth.

We have records of the sayings of the representatives (Naibs) during ghaibat-e-Sughra explaining and encouraging aza-e-Hussain. From 329 AH onwards the fuqaha and the ‘ulemas took it upon themselves to perpetuate the message of Kerbala.

Shaykh Ibne Babawayh-al-Qummi better known as Shaykh as-Suduq who died in 381 AH was the first scholar to have introduced prose as medium of conveying the message of Imam Hussain. He would sit on a pulpit and speak extempore while many of his students sat by the side of the pulpit and recorded the speech. His speeches have been preserved and to this day are known as the Amali (dictations) of Shaykh Suduq.

Public demonstration of grief first occurred in 351 A.H. On the 10th of Muharram, there was a spontaneous procession in the street of Baghdad and thousands of men, women and children came out chanting “Ya Hussain! Ya Hussain!” beating their breast and reciting elegies. In the same year, a similar procession took place in Egypt. The regime tried its best to stem the tide of aza-e-Hussain but failed. Very soon aza-e-Hussain became an institution with deep roots in the hearts of Muslims. Majlis evolved into an institution for amr bil ma’ruf and nahya anal munkar as well as reminder of the tragic events.

As Islam spread, different cultures adopted different modes of aza-e-Hussain. Taimur Lang introduced the institution of tabut and alam in India. As Islam spread southwards on the sub-Continent, the form underwent changes to take into account local cultural influences so as to portray the message of Kerbala in the medium best understood by the local people, both Muslims and non-Muslims.

By the beginning of the 19th Century, there was not a corner of the world, from Spain to Indo-China, which did not have some form of demonstration on the 10th of Muharram.

The form varied from country to country. In Iran, the most popular form has been passion plays as a medium transmit the message of Kerbala in addition to the majaalis from the minabir.

In India, the Ashura processions became part of the Indian Muslim culture. Even the Hindus participated in these processions. The Maharajah of Gwalior was always seen walking behind the ‘alam of Hadhrat Abbas barefooted and without any insignia of his exalted office. Marthiyas and majaalis were such strong influences on the Muslim population that they helped strengthen not only their Islamic beliefs but also their political resolve.

History reports that even Gandhi on his famous salt march to protest against the oppression of the British Raj took 72 people with him in emulation of Imam Hussain protest against Yezid’s oppression.

C. IMPORTANCE OF AZA

The following excerpt from the last will and testament of the Late Ayatullah Ruhullah Khumayni (A.R.) is most touching and relevant:

“The memory of this great epic event (Ashura) must be kept alive. Remember, the cries of damnation and all the curses that are rightfully raised against the cruelty of the Bani Umayyayah caliphs towards the Holy Imams, are reflected in the heroic protests against cruel despots by the nations through the centuries. It is the perpetuation of such protests that shatter oppression and cruelty. It is necessary that the crimes of the tyrants in each age and era be indicated in the cries of lamentation and in the recitals of elegies held for the Holy Imams.” Where ever the Shiahs have gone they have taken with them the cultural forms of aza-e-Hussain as practised in their country of origin. Today, aza-e-Hussain in one form or another, can be seen throughout the world.

Aza-e-Hussain is an important institution and we have to ensure that it is kept alive so as to cultivate and nurture Islamic conscience in each one of us and that our children and their descendants remain committed to the cause of Imam Hussain.

D. AZA AT PERSONAL LEVEL

We must never lose sight of the fact that while the form of aza-e-Hussain may reflect the local indigenous culture, the essence of aza-e-Hussain must always be remembrance of the martyrdom of Imam Hussain and our re-dedication to his cause.

There is always the danger that if the form appears to be incongruent to the local norms and consequently incomprehensible to the young generation or to the indigenous population upon whom we wish to impress the message of Kerbala, the substance might gradually lose its significance. The fabric of the substance invariably depends upon the acceptability of the form.

Throughout history the form of aza-e-Hussain has always undergone changes to accommodate local norms. It is for us, therefore, to seriously re-evaluate the form in order to ensure that we can pass on to our children the substance of aza-e-Hussain in its pristine state and also make aza-e-Hussain an irresistible instrument of tableegh ! We are duty bound to Allah and His Prophet to ensure that our children grow up to accept aza-e-Hussain NOT as a ritualistic activity NOR as means for atonement, but as a serious commitment to the basic values of Islam.

Dr. Liyakat Takim in his speech in Toronto on the occasion of the last Hussain Day made this very profound statement: “The message of Imam Hussain can only be properly comprehended when we bear in mind the Qur’anic principle of tawheed which demands our undivided commitment to Allah only.”

I accept that not all of us can suddenly make or honour such a commitment. But supposing on the day of ‘Ashura, after performing our a’amaals or when the Ziyarah is recited after the aza, each one of us promises, in the name of Hussain ibne Ali, to give up one such activity as is contrary to the doctrines of Islam what a strong community we would be and what an excellent legacy we would leave for our children !! This in my opinion would be aza-e-Hussain par excellence !

D. AZA AS INSTRUMENT OF TABLEEGH

It is our duty to deliver Imam Hussain’s message to the indigenous population of the country we live in. We can succeed in this only if we ourselves appear to be true followers of Imam in all our interaction with the community at large. We must reflect the maximum integrity, Islamic values and our sincere commitment to Imam’s cause. We can not possibly be making the commitment enshrined in Ziyarat-e-Waritha without the least intention of honouring that commitment.

Processions are of course the institution effectively used in the countries of the East and in Africa. We have to convince ourselves that this institution can be equally effective in the West. If not, we must explore other means of taking Imam’s message to the people. We have to examine such activities as:

blood donation through Hussaini Blood Banks;
distribution of food to the needy;
maximum usage of media to explain the event and the fact the Holy Imam died to save the basic values cherished by all the communities;
publication and distribution of leaflets;
distribution of cold drinks in schools and colleges;
visiting the patients in hospitals with floral gifts. You may find that when you take a small gift to a patient in hospital you will have carried the message of Hussain to the entire family of that patient.
All these suggestions are based on the institution of the public “sabeels” which we still have in the East and in Africa. While mourning is important, perhaps we should limit that within the confines of our Imambargahs, and demonstrate the true spirit of Imam Hussain’s generosity when he ordered Hadhrat Abbas to provide water to Hur and his army. Perhaps we too may see a large number moving towards Islam and Imam Hussain.
E. ZAKIRI AND PRESENTATION OF HISTORY

I seek, with utmost respect, to offer word of caution to all my zakir colleagues.

Exaggeration can only discredit us and the cause of Imam Hussain. The historical accounts must be adhered to although at times, in our anxiety to arouse emotion, we resort to exaggeration. We should have the recorded history as our guide and reason and logic as our limitations as do most of our ‘ulema and fuqaha.

Abu Mikhnaf was the earliest historian who took testimonies from eye witnesses and compiled his maqtal. There is in existence today an book in Arabic called Maqtal Abi Mikhnaf. It is doubtful whether this is the original text. However we do have the excerpts quoted by Tabari and other historians. We zakireen have relied on various sources principally Allamah Majlisi’s Biharul Anwar and others. Several very good books in English exist on this subject. Maulana Sayyid Muhammad Rizvi is the compiler of a book containing several very interesting articles relating to the history of the tragedy of Kerbala. Then there is Shaykh Mufid (a.r.)’s al Irshad.

Extrapolations of certain inferences from known facts are not, in my opinion or in the opinion of the ‘ulema, objectionable. For example description of natural human emotions, though not chronicled in vivid detail may be extrapolated if the description is within the bounds of reason and does not detract from the character of the personalities involved.

Some of the maqaatil can be faulted in respect of certain statements For example Tabari records that the age of Imam Zain-ul-’abideen (A.S.) was questioned at Kufa and he was examined to determine whether he had attained buloogh. (See the History of al Tabari, Vol. XIX page 166). Shaykh Mufid gives the fourth Imam’s age at the time as 23 years. It is well known the Imam was married and had a son .

Many such contradictions exist in the maqaatil but this does not mean that we have to reject any account in toto. Detailed events, and often the names of those involved, are very difficult to record accurately even by an honest and meticulous chronicler recording contemporaneously as the events are taking place. Abu Mikhnaf began to compile his history, mostly through eye witness account at least twenty five years after the tragedy. It is necessary for us to be eclectic for so long as we remain within the confines of reason. To be eclectic we must know what historical material is available and where to find it.

It is not within the scope of this article to deal with all the historical sources I would refer the reader to S.H.M, Jafri’s the Origins and Early Development of Shi’a Islam, Chapter 7. I would also refer any reader interested in the subject to the following additional works:

The volume of Tabari referred to above.
Al-Irshad by Shaykh Mufid.
The article by Imam Hussain by Veccia Vaghliers in the Encyclopaedia of Islam which is based mostly Balaadhuri’s account.
F. OBJECTIVES
We have to remember that the ‘ashra-e-Muharram is a very emotional period and this emotion has to be exploited by the ahle minabir to convey the message of Kerbala, to awaken a hatred against all that Yezid stood for and to rekindle a commitment to Islam as preached by the Ahlul Bayt and for which Imam Hussain laid down his life.

We can not perpetuate the illusion that aza-e-Hussain means no more than a few tears, matam and processions. These are the means and not the end. They are important only if they lead each of us becoming a better shiah than we were in the preceding year.

If we lose sight of the objectives we may find ourselves answerable for forgetting and holding to ridicule the cause for which our Imam sacrificed so much !

Imam Hussain himself advised a muslim who was claiming to be a shiah to fear Allah and not to make a false claim lest on the Day of Judgement he is raised with the liars. “Our shiah,” the Imam added, “is the one whose heart is pure of malice, deception and corruption. His words and deeds are only for the pleasure of Allah.”

We must during this forthcoming ‘ashra-e Muharram pose this question to ourselves in all seriousness. Do we intend to make a commitment to Imam Hussain’s objectives or do we wish to continue complacently in our current state, paying what can best be described a lip service to his martyrdom with demonstrative mourning only ??

While I pray that we begin, as we must, to understand the philosophy of aza-e-Hussain and make a serious commitment to the objectives of the King of Martyrs, I sincerely hope that there never comes a day when majaalis are replaced by clinical lectures devoid of all emotion ! Reason when supported by emotion has a more enduring effect, and it is for this very end that as a recompense of the rationality of the message of the Holy Prophet he is told by Allah to ask for no recompense save the love of Ahlul Bayt. Love, while being an emotional force, becomes hypocrisy if one fails to identify and follow the wishes of the loved one.

May all our Muharrams be true demonstration of our love for, and a confluence of emotion, reason and commitment to, Imam Hussain.

Chehlum is the 40 th day of the Martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain the beloved grandson of the Holy Prophet who was ruthlessly put to death by Yazid of the Ummayad Caliphate for not paying allegiance to his autocratic rule and depotism, .

Shah ast Hussain, Baad Shah ast Hussain,
Deen ast Hussain, Deen Panah ast Hussain,
Sar dad na daad dast, dar daste Yazeed,
Haqqah ke binaaye La Ilaha ast Hussain!

شاه است حسين پادشاه است حسين
دين است حسين دين پناه است حسين
سر داد نه داد دست در دست يزيد
حقا كه بنائى لا اله است حسين

At Moghul Masjid the nightly majlis recited by Maulana Abbas Irshad continue, these are known as the Arbaeen majlis, the Mosque is fully packed.People from all walks of life make a beelinf for this young and versatile Maulanas discourses, he is a fiery orator, pumps adrenalin to pain, a pain that never succumbs this pain is called Ghame E Hussain..Earlier I was told the moral brigade of Shia hardliners took offence to my pictures of Shiasm on my Word Press site that includes Hind gods goddesses, the greater objection being the Naga Sadhus.
But it is so myopic that on the Internet just a click away are sites you would be ashamed to see, so I had decided I would post my Shia stuff at my new site
However I decided people come to my site not because I am a Shia, or a Sunni , or a Hindu, they come because I impartially as a cybernetic photo journalist blogger write on subjects that are close to my heart,so I have decided that Word Press will continue to be my main Blog Site.
Honestly I am not a Shia site mentality guy, this is without offending those who are doing a great job keeping our community informed like Mr Syed Masoom Abidi, of Muslim Unity, 14 Masumeen. He is one person , who has great respect for me as I have for him.
I am not into evangelising Shiasm, proselytizing , I am not a Mullah aspirant , this is without hurting those who continue to do the healing work, there are many of them, whatever my views I know for a fact that Maulana Janab Kalbe Jawad has always stood in the frontline with an olive branch, trying to bridge the sectarian gap between Shia and Sunnis.
I also know the majority of Shias consider him a tolerant, spiritual leader , who I am sure in the coming times will play a very important role in mass educating our youth , into the mainstream of modern technology,,education is the only answer to rid us from our economic backwardness..
Well I digress I think the Chehlum in Mumbai , is the most awesome event in the life of the migrant Shias who have made Mumbai their home, the Sabils near Moghul Masjid, all lit up, the 24/7 majlis reverbrating from the speakers, the crowds at Hydei Book store to pick up the latest Noha, the 150 year old Iranian Hamam, people from out of town, having a quick shower here, ths the euphoria of Mumbaya Chehlum, on the roads the whetting stone guys sharpening the old rusty blood stained zanjirs, the flagellating blades, also selling chinese daggers for kama zni or forehead cutting, the Khusali Iranian kava shop is packed overcrowded ,Chehlum in Mumbai is a metaphor for Azadar E Hussain..thanks to Maulana Abbas Rizvi llate Mr Yousef Nasser , who fought to remove the blanket ban that existed in Mumbai against celebrating of Moharam.
Today because of their efforts we are reaping the rewards, we are seen , we no more have to fear being pelted by stones for fllowing the faith of our forefathers.
Earlier I am told people would carry black shirts to Kaiser Bagh, for Majlis than wear it there, after the Majlis back to normal clothes, such was the hate for Shias and Shiasm.
So the most important agenda for hot headed Shia youth is for the sake of Hazrat Imam Hussain let Azadari continue , defiance retaliation will only hurt the entire community.. Azadari is our identification as a Shia let it not stop.Let our religious leaders and their religious leaders settle things amicably..you guys in Lucknow should take a lesson from us Mumbaikars , Hyderabadis, go to Kolkatta see the Sunnis Shias celebrate Moharam wthout creating law and order problems.. ths is my personal belief, even Delhi is an example of Shia Sunni compatibilty.
Now some assorted Chehlum pictures ..as many are deleted on my Word Press site.
Also during Chehlum in Mumbai are the Shia Gypsies or Khana Badosh who come from interiors to participate in this event, they are a very dynamic race , their kids and women the most beautiful specimen of nature and Gods kindness to their free spirit.

The Little Sakina

little sakina

This little girl is the daughter of Munna who recites namaz on fire during Ag ka Matam , most of the julooos she accompanies him loyally, dressed in a manner to invoke the pain that Hazrat Imam Hussains 4 year old Sakina had to bear , after the Martyrdom of her beloved father , brothers, relatives , but her sense of guilt was sending her Uncle Hazrat Abbas to fill her water pouch , from the blocked river of Euphrates.
Her Uncle Abbas surrounded by the might of the Ummayad armies till the bitter end..hands dismembered from a brave body, he gripped the water pouch by his jaws, but Arabian cruelty , inhumanness is a genetic trait, they spared him not, the water pouch, like a ripped heart of a little child bled , as the blood of Hazrat Abbas mingled with it, yes this precious parched water pouch we Shias call Mashke Sakina.
Every battle has certain rules, even the worst enemy is shown some form of tolerance, but this is the Tolerance of an unspeakable Ummayad Islam…Hazrat Abbas the warriors head to was decapitated hung on a spear as a war trophy, to be presented to Yazid.
Now remember these glorious fighters are presumably all Namazis, having the Holy Koran on their person, the tazbi… Islamic piety, their enemy a handful, 72 so to speak, the charge of the light brigade is nothing in comparison to Karbala as a battlefield.. the Holy Prophets Inheritance wiped away in a single slash…the Arab world condemns the hanging of Saddam Hussain, he was not given the rightful death, , no dignity in hid death, hoodlums killed him, taunted him, filmed his last moments for posterity and a hungry electronic media… the whole world was up in arms.. protest , everywhere in the Islamic world… revenge killings in Iraq, Pontious Pilate Bush , had already washed his hands they were smelling like roses, he took an extra dose of his sleeping pill, Commander of the US Armed forces…
Like the others I too would condemn the way he was killed, forgetting all his genocide, his inhuman laws that crushed oppositional thought..but for a moment cut back to Karbala.. well the Arabs have already forgotten it, we Shias keep it Alive , year after year , 1400 years a single chant like bellls reminding the world of a greater holocaust, than that carried out by Hitler.
Simly because this is the seed of the Man who gave us a reason to live with Dignity, who gave us the Kalma who bought us out from the wilderness of the Dark Ages, mind you I am not a Koranic scholar or historian, I am a pot of clay, yes I shed drops to show you my pain.. I crack when I am parched, so now you try to see Pain through the eyes of a Shia.. yes we relive it , we call this state on mind Azadari E Hussain , we use symbols, not just rhetoric , so our children, even in their darkest hours, will realise there is no greater pain than that of Imam Hussain.. this is known as Ghame Hussain.
The 10 th day of Moharam is called Ashura the Ultimate sacrifice the Head on a Platter…
but not the Hand…

SHAH AST HUSSAIN BADSHAH AST HUSSAIN
DEEN AST HUSSAIN DEEN PANAH AST HUSSAIN
SURDAD, NADAD DUST DUR DASTE YAZID
HAQQA KE BENAYE LA ILAH AST HUSSAIN

Hussain is the king, indeed he is the king of kings
Hussain is Deen and also the protector of Deen
He gave his head but not his hand of allegiance in the hand of Yazid
Indeed he was the founder (Like his grandfather)
of the concept of One God.

Two months eight days we grieve, our lives colorless, monochromatically shadowed black, I am happy I do not have to filch words from Shia sites this one time.. save the quatrain Shah ast Hussain.
So we go through Ashura , towards Chehlum, to Athvi.. till we realise that the Imam tear eyed too wants t go back to the land od Sorrows Karbala, all the Bibis the children, heads covered crossing the Hindu Kush, little Sakina turning back her head , yes Hazrat abbas will notleave , lying at his Dargah in LUCKNOW , YES HEAR MY SOBS , WE SHIAS TEND TO CRY SUCH IS THE ELOQUENCE OF THE HOLES MADE ON A WATER POUCH CALLED MASHKE SAKINA.. The Fourth Imam too walking unsteadily , chaind that have yet remaind cutting into the flesh of his soul, man can live many lives , but the Fourth Imam lived one Life ..a life that reverbrated the silence of the winds and the sandstorms crying out like a wounded eagle caught in electrical wires of modern times Sham Sham Sham.
Yes Ahle Bait moves the finger, of a wounded hand etching sorrow of our omnipresent pain.
Ya Hussain
Ya Hussain.
I personally a day after Navi started going back , yes Moharam.. starts the day after Navi for me…I am a heretic , I am a Hindu, I am everything , but whatever my greatest sin, even if you doubt the sincerity of my so called Shiasm, unlike yours, I will now confess ,, as the caravan moves away from the vision of my Imagination, I see one Lady , a solitary lady with huge Wings , protecting the caravan her flapping Rida , echoing words that soothe the turbulence of the Winds .. Nade Alliun Mazhbul Ajaib.. yes Janabe Zainab,, the Indomitable sister of Imam Hussain reciting Words without borders…
Yes Janabe Zainab.. the power and strength of an Islamic conviction…
Without her …nothingness.. minarets Azan and nothing else…
Today we see Karbala and Shaam through her Rida..

update

Sitting here at the cybercafe I can hear Nohas spreading the pain of Hussain dessiminating age old Lucknowi cultural heritage finding its way into the hearts all linked to singular moment in Old Lucknow called Azadari E Hussain..

Even little kids are given an opportunity to recite their stuff this is what makes kids adults , aping their fathers , translating pain..yes indeed for a Shia Moharam is not about a mournful month but a month to reinvigorate the soul, remove the dust of materialism, all our worldly pain leading into the ocean of a prismatic clarity , Hussain a single Word ..Pressed in our consciousness much before we were born, much before our parents were born.

I can tell you one thing everywhere in the world irrespective of our cultural difference, environmental diversity , one thought stands at the helm, a single Man who took on Yazidiyat.. with blood of the Holy Prophet running in his veins, the ancestral blood of the family of Abu Talib the blood of the Lion of Khyber ..a lion of all times Hazrat Ali ibne Abu Talib.

Hussain on on his steed Zuljana carried the Promise of his Grandfather The Holy Prophet ..of quenching our thirst even if it meant to giving his head to Yazid but not his hand…

Shah Ast Hussain Badshah Ast Hussain… the beginning to the beginning of a new dawn in Islam…

Ya Hussain

Azadari Movement in Lucknow

chup tazia

 http://www.imamreza.net/eng/imamreza.php?id=3777

Lucknow is known as a seat of Shiasm and the epitome of Shia culture. Muharram which is observed in Lucknow is famous worldwide. The processions of Muharram in Lucknow have a special significance. They were started during the reign of the Awadh Nawabs. The Majalises, processions and other rituals that are observed by the Shia community to commemorate the sacrifice of Imam Husain A.S. are known as Azadari.

The processions like Shahi Zarih, Jaloos-e-Mehndi, Alam-e-Ashura and that of Chup Tazia have special significance for Shia community, which are taken out with great religious zeal and fervour. These processions which started during the reign of the Awadh Nawabs continued till the year 1977.

Processions Banned
The first problem regarding Azadari started in the year 1906. Communal riots took place in the years 1968, 1969, 1974 and 1977. The Government of Uttar Pradesh banned the Azadari processions in the year 1977. The Shia community from time to time has been constantly protesting against the ban imposed on Azadari. Many memoranda were sent to the Government regarding the ban but to no avail. The system of courting arrest was also started later by the late Maulana Syed Kalbe Abid in which thousands of Shias courted arrest on the 10th of Muharram every year, at the Imambara Asifi in the protest of this ban.

Self Immolation
On the 10th of April 1997 under the banner of “Karvane Furat” the Shias sat on a hunger strike to press their demands and attract the attention of the Government but the effort was in vain.
Having been irked by the attitude of the Government and seeing that no other option was left for the community, three Shia youth committed self immolation on 13th of April 1997 at Dargah Hazrat Abbas (A.S.), Mohd. Abbas (24 years), Yusuf (38 years) committed self- immolation. They breathed their last on 16th April 1997 in Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi. On April 16th another Shia youth, Ishrat Altaf, committed self immolation and passed away.

Maulana Syed Kalbe Jawad Arrested
Noted Shia religious scholar of India Maulana Dr. Syed Kalbe Sadiq called on the community to observe a Peace March on the 18th of April, 1997. A march was scheduled from Imambara Asifi to Imambara Husainabad in which more than two hundred thousand Shias along with other Ulama participated.
Imam Bukhari of Shahi Jami Masjid in Delhi showed his interest in negotiating the vexed Azadari issue and was expected to arrive in Lucknow on the 31st May 1997. On 3rd June he was arrested on the outskirts of the city. Along with him noted Shia Ulama, the Imam-e-Juma of Masjid Asafi, Maulana Syed Kalbe Jawad and Sunni Ulama late Maulana Qamar Minai were arrested for organising a meeting and defying Section 144 I.P.C.

On hearing of their leader’s arrest, the Shias stormed the Vidhan Sabha(the provincial assembly of Uttar Pradesh state) and performed Matam. The Government Uttar Pradesh seeing the situation going out of hand was forced to release the leaders without further delay.

Shia’s Decisive Battle
Police mercilessly beat Shias including women and children on 8th June 1997 in Muftiganj in the Alam procession.
Upon knowing of this incident Maulana Kalbe Jawad called an emergency meeting of about 115 Shia Anjumans(associations) of the city. At the meeting it was unanimously decided that if the government did not lift the ban on Azadari by 24th june 1997 (18th Safar) the Shias would defy the ban and take out the Alam procession on the 26th of June 1997. The Administration and the government did nothing they imposed a curfew in the city on the night of 26th June 1997. The Chief Minister Ms. Mayawati issued a strict warning to the Shia community that any attempt to take out Alam procession would force the government to deal strongly with them.
The police sealed all the Shia dominated localities but ultimately Shia’s defied the curfew. The Government to save itself from an embarrassment transferred the then District Magistrate of Lucknow and issued the order for the arrest of Maulana Syed Kalbe Jawad under National Security Act (NSA).
The Administration on the 28th of June 1997 at 4:00 a.m. arrested Maulana Syed Kalbe Jawad. He was sent to Lalitpur Jail while his family was incarcerated with the prisoners of TADA. News spread like wildfire in the city and the people again break the curfew. The police mercilessly beat them up. Shia women stormed District Magistrate residence and protested there. Shia youth performed matam at the Vidhan Sabha.
People from other parts of the country also started lending their support to the Azadari Movement. There were also various protests and agitations reported from the different parts of the country against the arrest of Maulana Syed Kalbe Jawad. Indian Shias residing in New York, Syria, Pakistan, Iran and other countries also protested against the Maulana Syed Kalbe Jawad’s arrest.
The situation went out of control and the Government was left with no other option but to release Maulana Syed Kalbe Jawad. Finally he was released on the 8th of July, 1997.

Ban Lifted
The Government assured the Shias that the Azadari procession problem would be looked into and solved in three months time and asked for all agitations and protest to be postponed till then.
The Shias did so. Upon the expiry of the period of 3 months the matter was not solved and Maulana Syed Kalbe Jawad decided again to defy the ban on Azadari on 27th of September. The Administration, finally held rounds of talks between Shias and Sunnis.
The Shias were successful in taking out the first Azadari procession in January 1998 (21 Ramzan) with the permission of the Government.
Today the Shias have been given nine processions out of nine hundred that are registered in the festival register of the Shias.
The struggle is on to get more processions allowed by the community under the leadership of Maulana Syed Kalbe Jawad.

Azadari E Hussain

from net

By Syeda Zahra, Advocate

(Courtesy of Tehrik e Nifaz e Fiqah e Jaffria, Pakistan)

Some anti-Islam internal and external forces present the Fatawa (verdicts) and opinions of Maraje Uzzam with distortion and tempering which is a severe deeni, literary and moral breach of trust. The original verdicts being compiled in this article are with the compiler.

Ayatullah Al Uzma Haaj Syed Abul Qasim Moosavi Al Khoie

“performing azadari-e-Imam Hussain (AS) is a part & portion of His (AS) mission because declaring the zulm (oppression) of zalim (oppressor) and mazloomiyat of mazloom (oppressed) is exactly the Deen.”
Ayatullah Al Uzma Roohullah Khominie, Rahber-e-Inqalaab-e-Islami Iran

Ayyatollah Khomeini

“life of nation lies in Azadari. Hazrat Imam Hussain(AS) granted salvation to Islam, and protected its eminence from being trampled by kissing martyrdom. So holding majalis-e-aza to commemorate Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS)’s martyrdom is a source of everlastingness and immortality of Islam. Those who oppose these majalis, oppose Islam. They are totally unaware of Islam’s reality. It is Azadari-e-Syed-ush- Shuhada (AS), which has given protection to Islam till today. Seena zani (beating chest), nohay, lamentation and cries are the very secrets of our success.”
Ustad-Ul-Fuqaha Wal Mujtahiddeen Ayatullah Al Uzma Muhammad Hussain Al Gharvi An Na’eni, former chancellor Hoza-e-Ilmiya, Najaf-e-Ashraf, Iraq.

People of Basra asked Ustaad ul Fuqaha Ayatullah Al Uzma Muhammad Hussain Na’ini many questions about Sha’a'ir-e-Azadari. The most important question of those was concerning zanjeer zani and quma zani. Ayatullah Na’ini first explained the greatness and importance of Azadari in these words:

“The coming out of Azadari processions on roads and paths in Ashra-e-Aashoor (ten days) and on other similar occasions is from among those amoor, in the legality of which there is no doubt. Rather this is the most evident source and most prominent inclination from among the mazahir of Azadari-e-Mazloom. It is the easiest way for the promotion of Imam Hussain’s mission and Deen’s completion.”

Afterwards he answered the query about Quma zani and zanjeer zani, which is as under:

“(To commemorate Hazrat Imam Hussain A.S.) There is no ambiguity in slapping the face and beating the chest to this extent that they (face and chest) become red or black but also to perform zanjeer zani on the shoulders and back is legal. But if the blood appears or comes out due to slapping and beating, it’s also lawful and right. As far as taking the blood out from forehead with swords etc is concerned, its legality is aqwa with the condition of being saved from harm and just to take the blood out from forehead with out causing harm to bone that is not harmful habitually. Because those who know how to use these (zanjeer, quma and sword) use it in such a manner which doesn’t cause harm to the bone. If at the time of taking the blood out he is sure of being safe from harm and by chance gets harm then it will be like that person who performs ablution or takes bath instead of performing dry ablution (tayammam) for he thinks that water will not harmful for him or a person who keeps fast considering himself healthy and that keeping fast will not harm him, but afterwards water or fast appears to be harmful for him, this will not be Haraam. As a precautionary measure, only those perform it who could. And those, who being subdued with the love and grief of Ghareeb-e-Karbala could not know that where the zanjeer and sword is hitting, should avoid. [bMay Allah give them firmness with qoal issaabit in this world and the hereafter.”
Ayatullah Abdullah Majeed Faqeehi Barojurdi

“All marasim-e-aza are from among the sha’a'ir Allah (signs of Allah). And to respect sha’a'ir Allah is piety.”
Ayatullah Syed Muhammad Ali Kazmaini Barojurdi

“Marasim-e-Aza (azadari rites) are not only mustahab (desirable) rather they are obligatory.”
Ayatullah Al Musleh Al Sheikh Muhammad Hussain Aal Kashif Ul Ghita

“By God, azadari is the gate of ample blessings of Allah, and the boat of salvation (kashti-e-najat) which protects from every destruction and trouble. Who is he and what sort of power is that, which could shut this open gate of Divine blessings and intercept this great mean & source, which leads towards Allah”
Ayatullah Al Uzma Syed Mohsin Tabatabae Hakeem

“performing azadari is a source of connection with the Guides of deen, of verdure and fertility of emaan, elevation and magnificence of deen and expression of Sha’a'ir-e-Deen (signs of religion). If these amoor-e-azadari (majalis-e-aza, mourning, azadari processions, matam, zanjeer zani and quma zani etc) are not to be performed, irreligiousness would get popularization”.
Ayatullah Al Uzma Gulpaigani

“Due to the blessings of Azadari, people get awareness of their rights. It is a source, by dint of which mission of Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) and the aim of Risaalat (prophet hood) is being revived. In fact Azadari is Deen (religion). The pure and sinless Aaimmah (AS) had said: “perform Azadari-e-Imam Hussain(AS) to stand against tyranny and despotism”. This is Azadari which gave birth to the biggest revolutions, shaked the basis of palaces of tyranny of Umayyad rule, redressed the grievance of oppressed and rooted out the oppressor.”
Ayatullah Al Uzma Mamqani

“These are the rites of Azadari, by virtue of which thousands of misled have become righteous.”
Ayatullah Al Uzma Haaj Syed Mohammad Haadi Meelani

” Azadari and its rites only are the most important means of promotion and thrive ness of deen. Which one is that pen which could duly and properly write down the supremacy, praise, virtues and the effects of His (AS) qayaam? Khandaan-e-Ismat-o- Taharat is a divine sign from among the divine signs and Imam Hussain (AS) is the mazloom son of that mazloom father that no one is there to take their qisas but Allah.”
Ayatullah Al Uzma Syed Abdullah Sherazi

” Rites of Azadari of Ahle-Bayt-e-Ismat- o-Taharat (AS) are from among the most important sha’air-e-deeniya (signs of deen) and are the excellent and most prominent deeds which will provide ground for more and more reward in Akhira (the hereafter). These lead the whole Muslim nation in general and shia nation in particular towards the achievement of great success and creation of revolutions.”
Ayatullah Al Haaj Syed Abdul Aala Sabzwari

” The respect, promotion and eternity of sha’air-e-Hussainiyat (Hussaini signs) is from among the most powerful and important means of liberation because Rites of Azadari are from sha’air Allah (signs of Allah)”
Ayatullah Syed Mirza Al Khurasaani Al Ha’eri

“Performing Azadari-e-Imam Hussain (AS)—-all of this is from the desired sources of nearness to Allah, a great success and eternal reward in this world and the hereafter, and whatever has been said or written against it, it is nothing but venom spitting of Ummayad and enmity of marvanis. Revival of sha’air’s (signs) respect is the promotion of Islam, presevation of Islamic signs and manifestation of Islamic lights.”
Ayatullah Syed Muhammad Jawad Tabatabai Tabrezi

“Azadari Rites of Hazrat Imam Hussain Ibn-e-Ali (AS) in whatever manner they are, all are the more effective means for Islam’s greatness, magnificence and protection. For that very reason enemies of Islam are making ambush but they are not able to snatch this great dawat (invitation) from the people.”
Ayatullah Al Uzma Muhammad Bin Al Mehdi Hussaini Sherazi

“Azadari of Imam Hussain (AS) is the very base of our religion and we want to protect Islam through it. Azadari rites are the sources of salvation for weak and helpless people from tyrant rulers. In whatever manner, sha’air-e-Hussaini are, they are superior and source of sawaab (reward)”
Ayatullah Ali Al Hussain Al Asfahani Al Faani

“We consider matam and sha’air-e- Hussainia the nearest means for nearness to Allah Almighty and reaching towards Rasool (peace of Allah be upon him and his progeny) and Aaimmah Huda (AS) because through it mission of these sinless guides get revived. Thrive ness of divine message and promotion of Ahkaam-e-sharia is the fruit of performing Sha’air-e-Hussaini. It creates unity and harmony in the ranks. I consider these sha’air a reply to istaghasa-e-Imam-e- Mazloom (AS)”
Ayatullah Al-Uzma Aqae Al Haaj Syed Muhammad Sadiq Roohaani

“Azadari is an effective weapon against oppression. Azadari processions are a source from among the Hussaini sources and a gate from among the gates of Heaven (Jannat). Qayaam of Syed-ush-shuhada (AS) and His sacred sacrifices happened to be the source of religion’s revival after its destruction .if it was not being done then their would be nothing remained of Islam but its name and of Quran but just a written thing.”
Ayatullah Sheikh Muhammad Raza Tibsi Nahfi

“All rites of azadari are religious signs (sha’a'ir), and to respect sha’a'ir Allah is a sign of piety of hearts.”
Ayatullah Syed Muhammad Waheedi Tabrezi

“It should not be hidden that in praising Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS), describing the factors of His Qayaam (coming out), lamenting over His (AS) sufferings, and in holding majalis such a great reward lies that the tongue and pen are unable to describe it. To respect the Azadari rites is a religious want and a source of reward. Weak and helpless of the world could be get freed by virtue of these azadari rites.”
Ayatullah Al Uzma Sheikh Muhammad Hussain Gharvi Asfahani

“Why these Azadari rites would not be the source of reward, hence just Azadari-e- Mazloom-e-Karbala (AS) and its rites have been the only and only source of unity of the nation, propagation of religion and promotion of Kalma-e-Haq in the past, present and will be in future.”
Ayatullah Hasan Qummi Tabatabae

“Majalis-e-Azadari are the only source which gathers the people on a platform and make them aware of religious teachings.”
Ayatullah Al Uzma Syed Asad Ullah Moosavi Dazfoli

“Azadari rites cause honour, dignity and respect. They are national sign and from among those important Sha’a'ir, Aaimmah (AS) had again and again advised for. Mission-e-Masumeen (AS) is alive due to these azadari rites, and lesson of qayaam-e- haq against Baatil lies in it. In fact maraasim-e-aza (azadari rites) is Maktab-e- hle Bayt (AS).”
Ayatullah Aaqae Raza Madni Kashani

“The topmost objective of Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) was the protection and prosperity of Islam. So performing Azadari is from among the most important wajibaat.”
Ayatullah Hashim Aamli

“Azadari rites and description of sufferings of Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) has an effective role and contribution in the existence of Islam in general, and of Mazhab-e-Haqqa Isna Ashari, in particular.”
Ayatullah Sheikh Murtaza Mutahheri

“Azadari rites (majalis-e-aza, mourning, azadari processions, matam, zanjeer zani quma zani etc) are a basic movement and a collective Elaan-e-Jehad. A single tear being flown in commemoration of Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS)’s martyrdom, is also a Jehad (holy war).”
Ayatullah Al Uzma Al Sheikh Muhammad Ali Iraqi

“The most important result which is being obtained from Azadari is that: the listener feels that the blood which was caused to shed wrongfully, was the most sacred blood, and Ahle Bayte Ismat-o- Taharat (AS) were those holiest persons who were chained.”
Ayatullah Syed Karamat Ullah Hussaini

“Enemies of Islam also are aware of the advantage of azadari rites and majalis-e-aza. For the development of an Elevated Goal, the elimination of Imperialism, the eradication of satanic powers and the establishment of Universal Islamic Rule, the protection of Azadari is very much necessary.”
Ayatullah Al Uzma Aaqae Syed Shahab Ud Din Mar’ashi

“Qayaam of Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) is the Divine Qayaam. Ummat had crossed the limits of oppression and cruelties over Him (AS). So amoor-e-azadari (holding majalis, description of sufferings of Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS), beating chest, zanjeer zani, quma zani etc) should be performed as in the past. Rather to perform these amoor in the present day world is from among the zarooriyaat-e-deeniya and a source of enhancement in reward.”
Ayatullah Syed Murtaza Pasandeeda Khomenie

“To observe the azadari days of Aaimmah-e-Ahle Bayt (AS) is compulsory and obligatory, and to leave them out is against the masaleh of ummah.”
Ayatullah Syed Kazim Mar’ashi

“Arrangements of azadari rites, which is a source of success and blessings in this world and the hereafter is obligatory.”
Ayatullah Sheikh Ali Ghazi Shahroodi

“Azadari-e-Ghareeb-e-Karbala (AS) is a worship from among the divine worships. Munkar of azadari and its rites is in fact a munkar of zaroorat-e-mazhabi (religious necessity).”
Ayatullah Murtaza Askari

“To perform marasim-e-aza is a source of sawab (reward) and all rites of azadari are the promotion of sha’a'ir-e-deeniya (religious signs).”
Ayatullah Syed Taqi Tabatabai Qummi

“By virtue of performing azadari, reward and Allah’s pleasure is being achieved. Azadari rites are sha’a'ir-e-deeniya and Maktab-e-Syed-Ul-Mursaleen (peace of Allah be upon Him and His Aal).”
Ayatullah Syed Mehdi Mar’ashi

“Azadari of Syed-e-Konain (lord of two worlds) is a kind of angelic lights. It has been, and will remain a source of integrity of shia school of thought, development of deen-e-mubeen, promotion of commands of Khatim ul Anbia(peace of Allah be upon him and his progeny), propagation of mazhab-e-jafariya in the Islamic world, establishment of justice and equity, opposition of tyranny and oppression, and annihilation of oppressor.”
Ayatullah Nasir Makaram Sherazi

“Azadari of pashwa’e Hurriyyat (guide of freedom), Salaar-e-Qafla (leader of the caravan), Talib-e-Shahadat (desirous of martyrdom) Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) and his companions who sacrificed each and every thing in the battle of Haq and Baatil in Karbala and preferred the red death of martyrdom than the black and dark life of disgrace, is a duty from among the duties of muslim ummah.”
Ayatullah Al Uzma Syed Muhammad Raza Barojurdi

“Azadari with all its kinds, is a source of development of sacred deen, Islam .The people who do not give importance to Azadari-e-Imam Hussain (AS) and Ahle- Bayt(AS) ,their Emaan (faith/belief) is declining.”

Ayatullah Muhammad Fazil, Hoza-e- Ilmiya, Qumm

“All azadari rites are the protectors of sacred qayaam of Imam-e-Mazloom (AS). The first and last objective of Imam Hussain (AS)’s qayaam (coming out) was only the revival of Islam .as just as the foundation of Islamic revolution of Iran is under obligation to azadari rites, in the same manner the development and promotion of this revolution will be achieved through azadari and rites of azadari.”

“Azadari of Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) which is one of great sha’a'ir-e-mazhabia, has become a particular sign of Mazhab-e- Haqqa. It would not be improper and wrong to say that the existence of shia maslak without any change and modification up till now, and the protection of Usool and Faru, are under obligation to these Marasim-e-Aza (azadari rites) and Azadari-e-Ghareeb-e- Karbala (AS).”
Ayatullah Hussain Noori, Qumm Al Muqaddisa

“Azadari rites are commendable and praiseworthy rather a source of reward. It is necessary for the whole Muslim ummah not only to observe this bloody incident of Aashoor every year but refresh it every moment so that the weak and have nots of this Maktab-e-Fikr be embraced with the freedom of fikr-o-amal (thinking and deed).”

To commemorate Hazrat Imam Hussain Ibne Abi Talib (AS), who was The Representative of Khasaan-e-Khuda, The Successor of Anbia (AS), and The Protector of deen-o-shariat, is the declaration of success of Mohaz-e-Tauheed, challenge of Jehad to polytheism, infidelity, oppression, tyranny, despotism and barbarity, the revival of dawat-e-Tauheed-o-Risaalat-o-Walayat. His objective was universal and high in character restoring supremacy of religion, respect of the humanity, preaching and protecting the message of Tauheed-o- Risaalat and walayat. Karbala is the central point of all movements in action for achievement of independence all around the world. Karbala is the name of giving priority to honourable death over life in humiliation. Islam is an expression of Hussainiyyat while Hussainiyyat that in fact is the message of death for evil forces, is commensurate with Azadari. Azadari is a universal protest of oppressed against oppression. Azadari is our jugular vein; it is the soul of all Ibadaat (worships) while zanjeer zani and quma zani are the soul of Azadari. Any one, who will collide with the strong rock of Azadari, will become unidentified.”
