Matam 28 Safar Zainabia 2010
I have placed another lot of 100 pictures on the Flickr uploader as I leave for work.. this is a very long series documenting the pain of the Shias we call Ghame Hussain..
And I show you the day in the life of a Shia Momeen of Mumbai..

Holistic Healing of Faith
I have told him to show restrain when he does matam , but he does not listen to me , he cuts at every Juloos procession , there is no stopping or holding him back..
He is a Shia Matamdar..
He made powerful hockey stick shaped flagellating blades cut his back.
And sometimes I am amazed at the few educated Shias who scourge and cut their heads publicaly and ask me why I take their pictures making me almost throw up, I mean if you are so protective about not showing your face ..why hassle the photographer with your spirtual arrogance and conceit..
I shoot pictures of the Shia , their anguish their pain to show you Ghame Hussain..
I dont glorify or evangelize the blood letting but it comes with what we call Tablike Hussain..
I dont sell or give my pictures for video clips I wish the Shia who is rude to me most of the time saw my pain uploading pictures all night, to share it with everyone..
I hope the few read this in Hyderabad and Mumbai where I was hassled most of the time ..even with a bleeding bandage on my head barefeet dressed in black..
And I dont post a single picture ..I post a lifetime of Shiasm.. this I say in sheer agony and humility..
People shoot my pictures I dont ever have a problem..so why they have a problem beats me why not cover your face with a checked scarf and save the photographer the agony of your rude and harsh words.
I had the same problem at the Shabbedari of Anjuman Asghariya this year and also at Rehmatabad Shia cemetery and I doubt if I shoot this Zainabia event again.. next year.

The Roza at Zainabia 28 Safar
The two taboots you see in the picture are of the Holy Prophet and Imam Hassan elder brother of Imam Hussain both children of Imam Ali..
Imam Alli was the cousin of the Holy Prophet and married to his only daughter Princess Fatima.

Having Dinner With Sameer of Piru Lane
I was to shoot the 28 Safar proceedings at Zainabia of Anjuman e Asghariya and I was in bad shape , my diabetic feet are festered because of the punishment I have given them recently , my climbing the Haji Malang mountains barefeet up and down , than plunging into Chehlum, barefeet again.
Last night I took a cab, reached Zainabia , but I had not eaten anything so I walked to Bohri Mohalla , to take a bite as this event the hardcore matam takses place at about 1 am..
I was having a seekh kaba and Sameer whose family stays at Piru Lane called me , he fetched me from Bohri Mohalla to share food with his kids..
Sameer as mentioned earlier is a devout matamdar and his brothers Syed and Danny have been my well wishers since a very long time..
He had bought some fried chicken and mixed with fine food his wife had cooked I broke bread with him.
Sameer stays at main Bhendi Bazar a very prime and spiritually healing location , everything even God is close by.
His son had slashed his head very badly but he participated along with his father in the znjeer matam, Sameer did the blade matam also made famous by the members of Anjuman e Asgariya.
I met his brother Danny too..
After the hardcore matam , the Shabbedari continued I left reached hme at 3 am and began uploading these pictures…this is a 2 GB card shot in a few hours.

This is my new set at Flickr of the 28Safar juloos , matam and majlis at Zainabia organized by Anjuman e Asgharia..
This is a 2 GB card I shot in a few hours of the hardcore zanjir kama and sword matam.
I will have to keep my backlog on hold…
I had shot this event last year too.. it is to commemorate the death anniversary of the Holy Prophet and martyrdom of Imam Hassan.

I Return Home After Chehlum

At about 11.30 pm I returned home after getting my kama head wound cleaned by the Doctors of Prince Aly Khan Hospital who had a First Aid stall at Mazgaon , they were serving the wounded free of charge..Hats off to these young docs..
I looked presentable enough to present myself to my two year old grand daughter Marziya Shakir..I threw my winding bleeding shroud that I wore over my clothes..it was drenched in my blood completely..
Chehlum was over the next concluding event of Moharam is Athvi when Moharam comes to an end after 2 months eight days.
The next days the Shia celebrate the Mother of All Idds called Eid E Zehra..or 9 Rabbilawal wearing red clothes ..and cursing the killers of Imam Hussain and burning the effigy of the enemies of Ahle Bayt..
I had shot 1716 pictures of Chehlum on the streets of Mumbai and at Rehmatabad Shia cemetery.. in about 7 hours..
I had cut myself twice on the streets and also at the Shia cemetery.
