Every Land is Karbala Every Day is Ashura

Evey Land is Karbala Every Day is Ashura, originally uploaded by firoze shakir photographerno1.

holding the safety of her fathers hand
from the valley of Kashmir to a distant land
blood flowing on the carpet of Karbalas sand
yazid the butcher of Islam you must understand
to destroy the tenets of Faith his evil planned
hussain did not give into his demand
72 brave warriors against the power of 30000
he took command ..in defense of honor
his final stand ..sword held high
holy scriptures in his other hand
though yazid had the upper hand
hussainyat
a message of peace and brotherhood
part of a holy stand
every land is karbala
everyday is ashura
yazidiyat
we will withstand

Fragrance of Kashmiryat

Fragrance of Kashmiryat, originally uploaded by firoze shakir photographerno1.

she comes from a land of a million smiles
a land of sorrow and snow ..
robbed of its heritage
by marauders they need to overthrow
the fragrance of heavenly
kashmiryat lives for ever
even in mumbai
as it glows
on her face
the tragedy of karbala clearly show
the waters of the river Euphrates
from shia eyes on to the hanky
of bibi fatima flow
mashke sakina
weeping with abbas s
blood although
parchame abbas
billowing in the winds
to and fro
unfulfilled desire
at sham
to bibi zainab
a chaddar
he could not bestow

The Slash of Faith

The Slash of Faith, originally uploaded by firoze shakir photographerno1.

I had cut my head recently , and had bled profusely, this was while doing the kama matam at Ashura Juloos near JJ Hospital corner.

Mostly I try not to do too viciously as shooting becomes difficult.. but this time I let go..

My scars have healed though my head looks like a filed ploughed by the dagger of Faith..

Normally I wear my hat to cover it up from my clientele..

Walking on Fire Arambagh

Walking on Fire Arambagh, originally uploaded by firoze shakir photographerno1.

The actual practice is to walk without running, without insulting the dignity of a mourning moment.. the Islamic Volunteer Troop has a stall with all the necessary first aid and a doctor in attendance..

Also if the feet get badly burnt the kids apply henna, that cools it instantly.

I have walked the fire ramps at Hussain Tekri, the longest, in Lucknow at Diyanudaullah and at Kazmain.

In Mumbai I have walked at Mira Road, Supari Talao and the Shia Khoja cemetery.

Walking on Fire Arambagh

Walking on Fire Arambagh, originally uploaded by firoze shakir photographerno1.

When the fire ramp or khandak has been blessed bt the Sajjads with their alams , and after they have walked on it, the public move in to walk the same , this is also known as Fire Matam..

This is done in the memory of the fourth Imam Zainul Abedin the surviving son of Imam Hussain in the karbala holocaust.

He along with the ladies of the house hold including little children, were manacled , chained, and made to walk bare feet to Sham Damascus over the burning sands.

This was Yazids form of torture, towards the family of the Holy Prophet, the massacre the genocide was uncalled for.

Yazid is and will always remain the Butcher of Karbala , walking his footsteps blood of this serpent seed was Saddam Hussain … another modern time butcher of Shias and Kurds.

I have been away from my net because thanks to You Telecom, I had to sit and twiddle my thumbs, the connection was down since 10 am it has just resumed now…

About the kids walking on fire, well initially they are reluctant and scared , but theyare never coaxed to walk, instead the volunteers lift them by the handsand let them cross over to safety..

But than there is always a first time , once the child gets over the fear he walks several times …

love of humanity
the soothing pill
to cure the malady of madness
spiritual serenity serendipity instill
live and let others live
unnecessarily

Fatiah on the Graves

Fatiah on the Graves, originally uploaded by firoze shakir photographerno1.

I spotted them, in the darkness, praying for the departed soul of a relative.
The dead are part of the living in Shias, as both on Ashra and Chehlum, the events take place in the Shia cemetery.
Another feat is Shabbarat or All Souls Day.. here to the relatives of the dead visit the grave offer Fatiah.. read Sure Yasin..

My parents are buried side by side at Rehmatabad Shia cemetery , death just could not part them.I had the tomb made in sparkling granite with specks of gold grain, that was in the granite itself…The Shakirs of Colaba Mumbai.

There is another Grave that of Nawab Kashmiri, father of Manu Bhaiyya and Akthar Baji, my father lived in his house as a tenant , and much of what we ae has come because of them, their influence has had a lasting effect…

The Grave has gone to seed , the tiles have all fallen off but it stands there , Nawab Kashmiri was a contemporary of Dilip Kumar, Mukri, Johnny Walker ,Jayant all football buffs , he had removed his 32 teeth to act in a film called Yahudi..

He was dead when my father came to stay at Wode House road , a sprawling spacious flat of over 10000sq feet..one flat on one wing the neighboring wing lived Dossabhai Kanga father of Keith Kanga of Atomic Forest my childhood friend who died tragically and in penury.

At the Rehmatabad Shia cemetery lies Meena Kumari the tragedienne Queen of Bollywood..Jalal Agha , Joe Ansari , Kamal Amrohi, to name a few including Dilawar brother of actress Guddi Maruti.

I somehow like Arambagh Shia Khoja cemetery it is well cared for, clean and neat .

The ambiance here is of equality, the rich the poor lying together , bought down to earth .. by death the common denominator..

Sabra Mody or Sabra Appa lies buried here mother Sharmil Tina and Khamsin, Sabra Appa was my wife’s best friend, and I always recite a fatiah fo her before I begin shooting the proceedings of Ag Ka Matam..

I was here with her family, to bury her when she died prematurely at a young age , of an ailing illness that she bore courageously .

Jinnah Saabs mother too is buried here ..I never forget to shoot her ..
