House Imambada

House Imambada, originally uploaded by firoze shakir photographerno1.

The heart and soul of a Shia household , is the quintessential house Imambada.

Bigger houses will have bigger Imambadas in the house , in Lucknow and Hyderabad an entire room is reserved and cordoned of as the Imambada.

I have over the years shot house Imambadas in Lucknow specially the one of my mother in law Wassim Qazilbash.

In the picture is our house Imambada perched on the wall an extension of a wall unit.

The Alams in the Imambada were recently received from a lady in Vazir Ganj Lucknow, the alams were given to her by my patrenal grandmother Khurshed Baji before she died, she told this lady to see that it was given to her grand sons wife..
Years passed and one day the lady accidentally met my wife’s mother and handed over these silver heirlooms to her which now adorn my family house Imambada in Mumbai.

The other artifacts belong to my mother Shamim Shakir which she handed over to my wife before she died a few years back.

The Shia Imambada really comes to life during Moharam, when it is artistically decorated , and the matam of the ladies starts from Moharam chand raat..eve of Moharm night..the ladies of the house and little kids..

After the matam recited by my wife or my daughter in law , the chant of Ya Hussain my wife gives out sweets to the family members , this colloquially called Hissa.

Marziya my 13 month old grand daughter too beats her chest with both hands as Ya Hussain is too much of a mouthful she keeps chanting Ya Ali Ta Ali.

Today is first Moharam, the Shias now will only wear black clothes ,the men go to the various Imambadas in town or wherever they stay.

The Bandraites are a divided lot, those who stay close to Bandra Shia Khoja Masjid go to the Majlis of Maulana Jaffar Abbas of Lucknow .

Those that want some change go to Rizvi college to catch up with Maulana Bilgrami.

But there are those brave hearts from Bandra who go to Moghul Masjid to hear the Shia scholar and Maulana of repute Maluana Athar Mirza Saab also from Lucknow.

There are those who watch his Majlis live at home on TV.

I will shoot the processions at Kaiser Bagh in a few days, though I am hoping against hope to shoot the Moharam in Hyderabad once again.. a task which I leave to the Mother of All Bibi Fatima..otherwise I shall remain in Mumbai and shoot the proceedings here .

Hyderabad Moharam is intense , it is awesome and Imam Hussain really comes to Hyderabad to be as close to his followers who leave no stone unturned , their spiritual austerity , their fervor is two words Ghame Hussain. nothing else.

I felt the same about Moharam in Lucknow too but I have distanced myself completely from the city of my birth..for personal reasons and hurtful memories.

My good friend Dr Glenn Losack MD too wanted to shoot Hyderabad but I have not heard from him..

Chehlum I would like to take him to Hussain Tekri Jarah.. Inshallah.

So this is Moharam and specifically the House Imambada in a nutshell.

” SHAH-E-MARDAN SHER-E-YAZDAAN QUWAT-E-PERWARDIGAR
LAAFATAH ILLA ALI LA SAIF ILLA ZULFIQAR “

NAME ALI (A.S).
FATHER’SNAME ABU TALIB (A.S).
MOTHER’S NAME FATIMA D/O ASAD (S.A).
DATE OF BIRTH 13th RAJAB 10 YEARS BEFORE THE PROPHET DECLARED HIS PROPHETHOOD.
PLACE OF BIRTH KHAANA-E-KAABA.
PERIOD OF IMAMAT 30 YEARS.
SON’S NAME IMAM HASAN (A.S) , IMAM HUSSAIN (A.S) , GHAZI ABBAS (A.S) etc .
DAUGHTER’S NAME ZAINAB, UMME KULSOOM.
KUNIYAT ABUL HASAN.
AGE 63 YEARS.
DATE OF ZARBAT 19TH RAMZAN.
DATE OF MARTYRDOM 21ST RAMZAN.
BURRIED AT NAJAF.

Ameer-ul-Momeneen Hazrat Ali (A.S) was born inside Khana-e-Kaaba on Friday 13th Rajab 30 Amul Feel. His father was Abu Talib S/O Abdul Muttalib. The Prophet’s (P.B.U.H) father Hazrat Abdullah and Hazrat Abu Talib (A.S) were real brothers. His mother was Bibi Fatima-bint-e-Azad Bin Hashim Bin Abd-e-Munaf. The Prophet (P.B.U.H) & Hazrat Ali (A.S) were paternal cousions, and the Prophet’s (P.B.U.H) daughter Bibi Fatima Zehra (A.S) was his wife.

The Fact that Hazrat Ali (A.S) was born inside Khana-e-Kaaba has never been contradicted by any sect of the followers of Islam. No one was born in the Khana-e-Kaaba before Hazrat Ali (A.S) & no one will ever.

Before Hazrat Ali’s (A.S) birth his mother went to Khana-e-Kaaba and one of its walls split open & she entered inside the Khana-e-Kaaba & the wall joined again. She was a gust for 3 days in Allah’s home. When she came out on the 3rd days she came out from the same split from were she had entered the Kaaba. The wall joined again but the place on the wall where it split lift a crack, which is visible even today. This crack is proof that Hazrat Ali’s (A.S) mother did not go inside upon her own will but was invited by Allah.

The Prophet (P.B.U.H) named him Ali upon Allah’s will and he was also called Haider. According to riwayaats it is stated that one day when Hazrat Ali (A.S) was lying in his cradle and was a few months old a cobra snake climbed onto his cradle and Maula Ali (A.S) killed it with his hands. When his mother saw this she said,

“Allah’s Haider may Allah keep you safe.”

He had many titles , of which some are as follows : Ameer-ul-Momineen , Murtaza, Asadullah , Nafsullah , Haider-e-Karar , Nafs-e-Rasool , Sher-e-Khuda , Saaqi-e-Kausar , Mushkil Kusha .

The Prophet (P.B.U.H) brought him up , he stayed with Prophet (P.B.U.H) all the time and from the time the Prophet (P.B.U.H) declared his prophethood until his death Hazrat Ali (A.S) was always a right hand.

When the Prophet (P.B.U.H) migrated to Medina it was Hazrat Ali (A.S) who slept on the Prophet’s (P.B.U.H) bed and saved his life. In the war of Badr out of the total number of enemies killed Maula killed half of them while the remaining half were killed by other Muslim warriors .In the war of Ohud when the Muslims fled from the field even though Maula was injured he never left his post & fought bravely .It was in this war that Allah sent him a sword & Jibraeel (A.S) recieted a couplet praising him :

” SHAH-E-MARDAN SHER-E-YAZDAAN QUWAT-E-PERWARDIGAR
LAAFATAH ILLA ALI LA SAIF ILLA ZULFIQAR “

In the war of Khaibar when the Muslims were losing the war on the last day the Prophet (P.B.U.H) sent Maula Ali (A.S) in the field & he killed Marhab & Antar the strongest men in the enemy camp & uplifted the entrance door of the Fort of Khaibar . In short whether it was War of Khandaq , Hunain or in any war Maula Ali (A.S) was always present.

The Prophet (P.B.U.H) has called him the Father Of Knowledge. His sermons & letters are present in the book named “NAHJUL BALAGHA” & “NAHJUL ISRAR”.

There are many Aayaats in Quran in praise of Maula Ali (A.S). The Prophet (P.B.U.H) at the time of His last Hajj called all the Haajis & lifted Maula Ali (A.S) on his hands & said:

“MUN KUNTO MAULA FA HAZA ALI-UN-MAULA”

The Prophet (P.B.U.H) also said :

” IT IS ALI WHO WILL DISTRIBUTE HEAVEN AND HELL AMONG MANKIND “

Eid-e-Mubahila & its history

By: Ragheb Aboud

Eid-e-Mubahila is celebrated on 24 Zulhijja to mark the famous event of ‘Mubahila’ which took place in the year 10 AH against the Christians of Najran. A delegation comprised of 60 Christians of Najran headed by Abdul Masih their chief monkpriest came to the Holy Prophet (pbuh&hp) and discussed with the personality of Hazrat Isa (as). The Holy Prophet (pbuh&hp) told them not to deify Jesus for he was only a mortal created by God, and not God Himself. Then they asked who the father of Jesus was. By this, they thought that since he was born without a father the Holy Prophet (pbuh&hp) would helplessly accept Jesus’ father being God himself. In reply to this question was revealed the Verse:

“Verily, similitude of Jesus with God is as the similitude of Adam; He created him out of dust then said He unto him BE, and he became.”

When the Christians did not agree to this line of reasoning, then this verse was revealed enjoining upon the Prophet (pbuh&hp) to call the Christians to Mubahila.

“And unto him who disputeth with thee therein after the knowledge hath come unto thee, Say ! (O’ Muhammad!Unto them) come ye, let us summon our sons, and (ye summon) your sons, and (we summon) our women and (ye) your women, and (we summon) ourselves and then let us invoke the curse of God on the liars.”

To this the Christians agreed and they wanted to return to their place and would have the Mubahila the next day. Early next morning the Holy Prophet (pbuh&hp) sent Salman al Farsi (May Allah be pleased with him) to the open place, fixed outside the city for the historic event, to erect a small shelter for himself and those he intended to take along with him for the contest. On the opposite side appeared the Christian prists, while at the appointed hour the Christians witnessed the Holy Prophet (pbuh&hp) entering the field with Imam Hussain (as) in his lap, Imam Hasan (as) holding his finger, and walking beside him, Hazrat Fatima (as) and followed by Imam Ali al Murtaza (as).

Looking at these holy personalities, the Chief Monk addressed the huge crowd of the people who had gathered on the spot, and addressed them saying:

By God, I see the faces which, if they pray to God for mountains to move from their places, the mountains will immediately move. O believers in the Jesus of Nazareth, I will tell you the truth that should ye fail to enter into some agreement with Muhammad (pbuh&hp) and if these souls whom Muhammad (pbuh&hp) has brought with him, curse you, ye will be wiped out of existence to the last day of the life of the earth !

The people readily agreed to the advice counseled by their Leader. They beseeched the Holy Prophet ( pbuh&f ) to give up the idea of the agreed Mubahila and requested for themselves to be allowed to continue their faith, offering to pay ‘ Jizya ‘.

(Al Tabari, Commentary of the Quran, v 2 p 192, 193)

Letter of invitation to Christians of Najran:

The Prophet of Islam (S.A.W) wrote a letter to Abdul Haris Ibne Alqama, the Grand Bishop of Najran, who was the official representative of the Roman Church in the Hijaz. And invited the people of that area to embrace Islam. The text of the said letter runs as under:

In the name the Lord of Ibrahim, Ishaq and Ya’qub

This is a letter from Muhammad, the Prophet and Messenger of Allah to the Bishop of Najran: I Praise and glorify the Lord of Ibrahim, Ishaq and Ya’qub, and invite you all to worship Allah instead of worshipping His creatures, so that you may come out of the guardianship of the creatures of Allah and take place under the guardianship of Allah Himself. And in case you do not accept my invitation you must (at least) pay Jizyah (tribute) to the Islamic Government (in lieu of which it will undertake the protection of your lives and property), failing which you are hereby warned of dangerous consequences.

Muhammad, say to the followers of the Bible, “We must come to a common term: ‘Let us worship no one except Allah’……..” (Surah Ale Imran, 3:64)
The Prophet (S.A.W) goes for Mubahala (Imprecation)

Towards the close of the ninth year of Hijra, embassies from all parts of Arabia came uninterruptedly to the Holy Prophet at Medina, to profess Islam and to declare the adherence of their tribes to Prophet Muhammad. (Mention is made in the Holy Qur’an as below about this in Sura An-Nasr (Succor, Divine support)

When there comes the help of Allah and the victory, And you see men entering the religion of Allah in companies, Then celebrate the praise of your Lord, and ask His forgiveness; surely He is oft-returning (to mercy). 110:1-3

Until now, the Christians of Najran (a city in the province of Yemen) had kept themselves aloof. The Holy Prophet (S.A.W) sent a letter, inviting them to embrace Islam. In response to that letter the Christians counseled among themselves the course of their action and did ultimately send a representative deputation of fourteen members to Medina to study the facts pertaining to Hazrat Muhammad (S.A.W) and his mission. Three Christian scholars, viz. Abdul Maseeh Aaquib, Saiyed and Abdul Haris, headed the deputation.

When these deputies reached Medina, they changed their clothes, which they had worn on the journey, dressed themselves in silken garments, put rings of gold on their fingers, and went to the mosque to greet the Holy Prophet. All of them greeted the Prophet traditionally, but the Apostle of God did not respond and turned his face away from them. They left the mosque and approached Osman and Abdul Rahman Ibn Auf, complaining “your Apostle wrote to us and invited us, but when we went to see him and wished him, he neither reciprocated our wishes nor replied to us. Now what do you advise us to do? Should we go back or wait for another opportunity?” Osman and Abdul Rehman could not comprehend the situation. At last they took the disputes to Ali, who advised them to remove the clothes of silk and the rings of gold that they were wearing and to put on their priestly robes. The Holy Prophet would then willingly see them. Thereupon the Christian delegates changed into humble garments and presented themselves to the Apostle who then responded to their salutations and said, “By the Lord who has appointed me His Messenger, when they first came to me they were accompanied by Satan”.

Thereafter the Apostle preached to them and requested them to accept Islam. They asked, “What is your opinion about Jesus Christ?” The Apostle said, “You may rest today in this city and after being refreshed you will receive the replies to all your questions from me.” The Apostle was awaiting a revelation in this matter, and the next day the verses of the Holy Qur’an Sura No.3 (Al-e-Imraan) verses 59-60 were revealed to him to show the true position of Jesus Christ.

Surely the likeness of Jesus is with Allah as the likeness of Adam; He created him from dust, then said to him ‘Be’, and he was. (This is) the truth from your Lord, so be not of the disputers. 3:59-60

When they reappeared before the Holy Prophet, The Holy Prophet recited the above verses before the visiting Christians explaining that Christ was a Prophet like Adam and like Adam, created from dust and therefore could not be the son of God. After this, the Holy Prophet invited them to embrace Islam. The Christians remained obstinate and refused to be convinced by anything. Thereupon the following verse No. 61 from Sura No.3 was revealed:

But whoever disputes with you in this matter after what has come to you of knowledge, then say: Come let us call our sons and your sons and our women and your women and ourselves and yourselves, then let us be earnest in prayer, and invoke the curse of Allah on the liars. 3:61

Now the Holy Prophet reproduced the Quranic verse before the deputation of the Christians and declared the challenge of ‘Mubahala’. The term ‘Mubahala’ is derived from its Arabic root ‘Bahlah’ meaning ‘curse’. Thus the word ‘Mubahala’ literally means cursing each other. The Christians consulted each other and ultimately announced their acceptance of the challenge.

Early next morning the Holy Prophet (S.A.W) sent Salman al Farsi ( May Allah be well pleased with him ) to the open place, fixed outside the city for the historic event, to erect a small shelter for himself and those he intended to take along with him for the contest. However, it was on the morning of 24th Zilhajj that the Holy Prophet emerged at the appointed time and place, from his sacred abode with Imam Hussain in his arms and holding Imam Hasan’s hand and Janab-e-Fatima followed by Hazrat Ali (styled as the Holy Panjetan). The Holy Prophet then directed them to utter “Ameen” when he prayed to God.

No sooner had the sacred caravan of the Holy Prophet appeared to the sight of the opposing group of the Christians of Najran then they were awestruck and spellbound. Abdul Haris lbne Alqama, the greatest scholar among them, addressed his people:

“Verily I see a divine light on the face of our combatants; I am beholding such faces among them as can make the mountains move from their spots if they pray to God. So beware! Never try to contest with them, otherwise you will perish and the entire nation of Christians will succumb to extinction!”

Thereupon the Holy Prophet reiterated, “By God! Had the Christians of Najran contested with us, they would have been transformed into monkeys and swans. Fire would have rained over them from the sky and they would have been doomed.”

When the Christians refrained from ‘Mubahala’, the Holy Prophet put before them two alternatives: either to embrace Islam or to be prepared to come to terms. But the Christians would not agree till the matter was finally decided by an offer of treaty from their side. Thus a peace treaty was signed on the terms that the Christians of Najran would thereby be committed to pay the Holy Prophet an annual tribute consisting of two thousand costumes-worth: forty thousand Dinars, thirty horses, thirty camels, thirty armors and thirty spears. (Meraj-un-Nabuwat)

Authentic Proofs are quoted below regarding the Ayat of the Holy Qur’an-Sura 3-verse 61 as given on page 73 Imam Fakhruddin Razi writes in his Tafseer-e-Kabeer (volume 2): “When this verse was revealed to the Holy Prophet, the Christians of Najran accepted the challenge of ‘Mubahala’ and the Holy Prophet took along with him Imam Hussain, Imam Hasan, Janab-e-Fatima and Hazrat Ali to the field of Mubahala.”

PanjatanTo quote Allama Zamakhshari in his ‘Tafseer-e-Kashshaf’. “There can be no more authentic and stronger evidence for the integrity of Ashab-e-Kisa, i.e., Hazrat Ali, Janab-e-Fatima, Imam Hasan and Imam Hussain than this Qur’anic verse. For in compliance with the order of God the Holy Prophet summoned his Ahl-ul-Bait, took Hussain in his arms, and grasped Imam Hasan’s hand in his own, asked Janab-e-Fatima to follow him and Hazrat Ali to follow her. This proved that the Holy Ahl-ul-Bait were those to whom the Qur’anic verse was directed.”

It is related by Soad Ibne Waqas that: “When this verse was revealed, the Holy Prophet sent for Hazrat Ali, Janab-e-Fatima, Imam Hasan and Imam Hussain and prayed to God thus: “O My God! These are the very Ahl-ul-Bait of mine!” (Sahih Muslim. Vol. 1, Sahih Tirmizi.)

Abdullah Ibne Umar quotes the Holy Prophet to have commented:

“Had there been any soul on the whole earth better than Ali, Fatima, Hasan and Hussain, God would have commanded me to take them along with me to ‘Mubahala’. But as they were superior in dignity and respect to all human beings, God confined His Choice on them only for participation in ‘Mubahala’”. (Tasfeer-e-Baizavi)

According to some versions it is stated that on the morning of 24th Zilhajj, a large number of people thronged the door of the Holy Prophet, every one anticipating his chance to be selected for the team of ‘Mubahala’. But when the Holy Prophet emerged out of his house accompanied by his ‘Ahl-ul-Bait’. They were all stunned.

The event of the Mubahala is important for the following reasons:

01. It proved to be a silencing lesson for all the Christians of Arabia who no longer dared any competition with the Holy Prophet (S.A.W).

02. The invitation of ‘Mubahala’ was directed by God, and it was in compliance with His Command that the Holy Prophet took his Ahl-ul-Bait along with him to the field of ‘Mubahala’. This serves to generalize how affairs pertaining to Apostleship and the religion of God are determined by the Will of God; allowing no margin of interference from the common people (Ummat). The matter of Hazrat Ali’s succession followed by eleven Imams to the office of religious leadership should be viewed in this perspective.

03. The indispensability of Hazrat Ali, Janab-e-Fatima, Imam Hasan and Imam Hussain in following the precepts of the Holy Prophet (S.A.W) could no longer be disputed.

04. That notwithstanding their childhood, Imam Hasan and Imam Hussain did nevertheless, serve as the active partners of the Holy Prophet in the field of ‘Mubahala’. This yields the conclusion that age is no criteria for the greatness of the infallibles (Masoom). They are born adorned with virtues and knowledge.

05. That the Holy Prophet’s act of having preferred a few obviously elevates their status above all others.

As Islam had emerged triumphantly against Christianity on the occasion of ‘Mubahala’, this day assumes the significance of an Eid day in Islamic history.

Why was Imam Ali included?

The Almighty commanded His Messenger to say to the delegation of Najran: “Come! We will summon our Sons and your Sons, our women and your women; and ourselves and yourselves….”

In compliance with this command, the Prophet brought with him, Al-Hasan and Al-Hussain, because they were the sons of his daughter Fatima, and for this they are his sons. He brought Fatima with him because she represents the women from the members of his House. But why did he bring with him Imam Ali who was neither from the sons nor from the women?

HadithImam Ali has no place in the verse unless he is included in the word “ourselves.”

Bringing Imam Ali with him indicates that the Messenger of God considered Imam Ali an extension of his personality. By considering him so, he elevated him above all the Muslims.

The Messenger said on many occasions: “Ali is from me and I am from him.”

Hubshi Ibn Janadah reported that he heard the Messenger of God, saying:

“Ali is from me and I am from him, and no one represents me but Ali.”

. Ghadir is on the way from Mecca to Madina. While returning from Mecca to Madina, after the last hajj, alongwith his companions, the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) broke the journey at a lake, 3 miles away from Al-Johfa. He (S.A.W) halted at midday in a wayside tract of barren land with no shade other than that provided by a few acacia trees. A small lake is called as Ghadir in Arabic, so this place is known as Ghadir-e-Khumm. The name Ghadir is no longer in use.
02. WHAT HAPPENED AT GHADIR-E-KHUMM?

Tabarani and others have recorded the following tradition as related by Zayd ibn ‘Arqam and transmitted through sources unanimously acknowledged to be reliable. Zayd says that the Messenger of Allah, Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him and his posterity, delivered a sermon at Ghadir-e-Khumm under a cloth spread as a canopy on two large trees. He said:

Hadith

“O my people! I am going to be recalled shortly and I must comply. I shall be interrogated and you also shall be interrogated. What will you say then?” The entire audience answered: “We shall bear witness that you did convey to us the message of Allah, and tried your best to guide us on the right path and always gave us good console. May Allah bless you with a good reward.” The Prophet proceeded: “Why do you not bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger, and that Paradise is true, Hell is true, Death is true, Resurrection after death is true, that the Day of Judgment will doubtlessly come and that Allah will raise to life the dead from their graves?.” They said: “O Yes! We bear witness to all this.” Then he said: “O Allah! You also may witness.” Then he said: ‘O my people! Allah is my Mawla and I am mawla of the faithful and I have superior right on and control over their lives. And this Ali is the mawla of all those of whom I am mawla. O Allah! Love him who loves him and hate him who hates him.” He further said: “O my people! I will precede you and you also shall arrive at the pool of Kawthar, the pool wider than the distance between Basrah and San’a', and there are on the pool as many goblets of silver as stars. When you shall reach me I shall interrogate you about your behavior towards the two in-valuable assets after my death. The major asset is the Book of Allah, the Mighty and Glorious, one end of which is in the hand of Allah, the Exalted, and the other end of which in your hands. Grasp it tightly and do not go astray and do not change or amend it. The other asset is my Progeny, who are my Ahl al-Bayt. Allah the Gracious and Omniscient has informed me that the two will not part from each other before they reach me at the pool.
03. WHEN & IN FRONT OF HOW MANY MUSLIMS?

This Ghadir-e-Khumm event happened on the 18th of Dhil-Hijjah (1410 AH), in 10 Hijra in front of nearly one hundred thousand (100,000) Muslims. While returning from the last hajj (Hajjatul-wida / farewell pilgrimage) of our Holy Prophet (S.A.W.).
04. CONTEXTS

A). QURANIC EXEGESIS (Tafsir):

O Messenger! Deliver what has been revealed to you from your Lord; and if you do it not, then you have not delivered His message, and Allah will protect you from the people; (AL-MAEDA/5:67)

This day have I perfected for you your religion and completed My favor on you and chosen for you Islam as a religion; (AL-MAEDA/5:3)

One demanding, demanded the chastisement which must befall, The unbelievers there is none to avert it, From Allah, the Lord of the ways of Ascent.(AL-MAARIJ/70:1-3)

B). PROPHETIC TRADITION (Hadith):

Imam Ahmad has recorded the tradition related by Bara’ ibn ‘Azib in his Musnad, vol.4, p. 281, transmitted through two different sources. Bara’ says: “We were with the Messenger of Allah. We alighted at Ghadir-e-Khumm. Congregational prayer was in order. An area under two trees was swept and cleaned for the Messenger of Allah, Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him and his posterity. He offered midday prayers and he grasped the hand of ‘Ali and said: ‘Do you not know that I have superior authority over the lives of the faithful than the faithful themselves?’ ‘Yes you have,’ they replied. He again inquired: ‘Do you not know that I have superior right to the life of every believer than the believer himself?’ ‘Surely, you have,’ they answered. Then he grasped the hand of ‘Ali and said: ‘Ali is the mawla of all those of whom I am mawla. O Allah! Love him who loves him and hate him who hates him.’” Bara’ ibn ‘Azib says: “Then ‘Umar came to ‘Ali and said: ‘Congratulations to you the son of Abu Talib. You have become the mawla (master) of all the faithful men and women.’”

C). HISTORICAL REPORTS (Tarikh):

Here we will just mention one instance which took place in Kufa during the khilafah of Imam Ali (A.S.), 25 years after the Prophet’s death.

When at Ali’s insistence a large number of people gathered in the plain of Rahbah in Kufah, he addressed them saying: “I administer an oath in the name of Allah to all such Muslims as heard the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) making a proclamation on the day of Ghadir-e-Khumm, to stand up and testify what they heard him say. Only those who saw the Holy Prophet that day with their own eyes and heard the proclamation with their own ears should stand up.” Thereupon, thirty companions of the Holy Prophet(S.A.W), including twelve of those who had participated in the battle of Badr, stood up and witnessed that the Holy Prophet(S.A.W) grasped his (Ali’s) hand and said to the audience: “Do you know that I have a prior right to and superior authority over the souls (i.e., lives) of the faithful than the faithful themselves?” “O yes!” they said. The Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) then said: “He (Ali) is the mawla (i.e., has prior right to and superior authority over the lives) of all those of whom I am mawla. O Allah, love him who loves him (Ali) and hate him who hates him.” It is logically impossible that thirty companions might have secretly agreed to speak a unanimous lie. In addition to the thirty witnesses there were other male companions whom enmity with Ali prevented from standing up and giving their evidence as eye-witnesses, like Anas ibn Malik.

When Ali (A.S.) said to Anas: “Why do you not stand up and testify what you heard from the messenger of Allah on the day of Ghadir?” he answered, “O Amir al-Momineen! I have grown old and do not remember.” Thereupon Ali said: “May Allah mark you with a white spot (of leprosy) unconcealable with your turban, if you are intentionally withholding the truth.” And before Anas got up from his place he bore a large white spot on his face. Thereafter, Anas used to say: “I am under the curse of a righteous slave of Allah.

Also bear in mind that this incident took place 25 years after the event of Ghadir Khum, and during this period hundreds of eyewitnesses had died naturally or in the battles fought during the first two khulafah’s rule. Add to this the fact that this incident took place in Kufa which was far from the centre of the sahabas, Medina. This incident which took place in Kufa in the year 35 A.H. has itself been narrated by four sahaba and 14 tabi’un and has been recorded in most books of history and tradition.

I Cross 52000 Blogs at Flickr, originally uploaded by firoze shakir photographerno1.

I have posted 778 Blogs in a single day 14 Dec 2008.

I thereby cross my 52000 blogs in 18 months…at Flickr .

Shooting the Jari Mari Palki procession was a real tough one , the action was very fast, but I did not let that dishearten me.

I wanted to share this unique Goddess with all of you.

Goddess Jari Mari is a powerful avatar of Goddess Durga widely worshiped in Maharashtra.

Her statue was found in a pond during the British Raj and the Britishers gave the land for setting up the Temple which stands tall at SV Road Bandra.

A lot of miracles take place here.

You see me here dressed in saffron but in a few weeks this will change, Moharam begins our mourning for Imam Hussain I shall be wearing only black for two month eight days.

No jewellery .

If Allah wills than I shall shoot the Ashura with my mentor Dr Glenn Losack MD in Hyderabad.

Dr Glenn Losack is besotted with the Shias of Hyderabad , he saw my pictures and thinks the Hyderbadi Shia fervor is the greatest there..

So wee keep our fingers and toes crossed.

a poem for nabila

“the beginning of learning”

through the august doors of this gate
of learning of our faith
the souls quest for immortality
of knowledge

lies a world
sans hate
bringing us closer
to Allah
the molder
